Greetings! "You can always become the person you would have liked to be." Napoleon Hill, 1883-1970, Author of Think and Grow Rich How are you doing with your 2013 Resolutions? If you are facing challenges, fear not. In today's Book Summary block, we have help for you. The Magic of Believing, although written in 1948, includes the timeless message that the act of believing is the starting force leading to any accomplishment. Clarity of belief is first, e.g., do you believe you can accomplish your resolution? Repetition of your belief in your resolution is second. The subtle force of repeated suggestion overcomes our reason, acting directly on our emotions and our feelings, and finally penetrating to the very depths of our subconscious minds. This is the basic principle of all successful advertising. A third factor ensuring the success of your resolution is accountability. Who knows your intentions? Find someone to whom you will be accountable; it does make a difference. Good luck! Happy February, Gail and Ed

INTERVIEW - Bozidar Djordjevic, PhD

Bozidar Djordjevic, PhD
Impressions of a Scientist in Exile
Retirement is a phase in life. The timing and the method of entering this phase differs according to individual circumstances. Bozidar Djordjevic, known as Boshko, worked longer than most but, upon being nudged into retirement because of impaired mobility, he mentally continued in his field without the environment or resources necessary to complete his research. His job as a professor of cancer cell research was his passion and now is what he calls, his "obsession."
Old world charm, a brilliant mind, warmth, sincerity, and frustration - these are the impressions we were left with after our interview with Boshko, the former professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at SUNY University in Brooklyn and current resident of Sunrise in Westfield.
Boshko was born and raised in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He followed the path of his father, a professor of Botany and the first Dean of Horticulture at the university in Belgrade, and his uncle who taught in the field of Zoology. Biology, more specifically, Genetics, called to Boshko, who later became immersed in radiation biology in the Nuclear Institute in Belgrade, which led to a career as a cancer cell researcher.
A one-year visit to the United States in 1956 lasted for four years, as this brilliant young man obtained his doctoral degree from Rutgers University in 1960. He then returned to his country for four years where he had the opportunity to start from scratch a research laboratory dedicated to the study of genetics.
The United States, however, was Boshko's ultimate destination. His success in Belgrade continued here in the United States where he experienced a successful career studying, researching, and teaching about cancer cell research. In addition to his two patents, Boshko has had a research paper published in Nature, and others in similar scholarly journals.
While living at Sunrise for the past four years, Boshko has contributed to the community with his writings, his puppets, his encouragement of his peers, his humor, and his continued quest for a science student whom he could mentor in order to continue his work in cancer cell research. During our interview, Boshko kept returning to his desire to find someone to continue his work. His frustration at being unable to publish, to research, and to entice someone to continue his work was obvious. Being currently outside the scientific community makes his quest even more difficult.
In a paper written while living in Sunrise, Boshko writes about the importance of having a sense of purpose while living in a retirement community and the importance of engaging in constructive projects. He allows that the conditions of life are determined by the residents themselves. His insight and sensitivity to his peers and his surroundings would be beneficial to those in charge of senior communities.
Because the mental and physical states of the residents vary greatly, he believes the best approach in handling such a population is to initiate a series of individualized activities in order to foster more of the innate potential of the individual residents. As he writes in his paper, the goal, paraphrased from one part of the Declaration of Independence is, "the pursuit of happiness." He believes that those individual goals should be achievable, but not easy to achieve. Challenge breeds strength.
In our Legacy Workshop at Sunrise, I witnessed firsthand Boskho's warmth and sensitivity to the other participants. In his quiet, gentlemanly style, he supplied encouraging, positive words to participants who were asked how they would like to be described, a difficult task for most of us.
We found Boshko's strength and determination to find someone to carry on his work admirable. We know he will leave no stone unturned in his search. We also thought his insightfulness related to activities that strengthen individuals in a retirement community profound and certainly useful.
In Boshko, we found a retiree who held on to his passion for research and discovery and continued to make it the primary focus of his leisure time activities while adjusting to his new environment and embracing the challenges he recognized his peers were still trying to deal with. As a result, we came away with a deep respect for this highly intelligent individual who still feels challenged, frustrated, impressed and invigorated with living his life on his terms and yet willing to contribute to the overall well being of his community at large.
His hand-made puppets, his scripts, his philosophy of life, and his good-heartedness in encouraging others make him an ideal person to stimulate his peers. This scientist in exile is a definite asset to his community and hopefully to the future of cancer cell research.

YOUR LEGACY RECORDED

Your LEGACY Recorded
"You understand your life better if you share it piece by piece with other people . . . Something happens during the telling that goes beyond what is achieved by the remembering alone. . . New experiences become reminders of feelings and events that we have set aside and thoughts we had forgotten . . . as each new session builds on previous sessions." - Dr. James Birren, Ph.D., Psychology Today. The result is not only greater self understanding for each participant, but also a stronger bond among family members.
Let us record and write your Legacy now.

BOOK REVIEW
THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol
| Claude Bristol's book, The Magic of Believing, is another of the most influential books in my library. It was well worth the time it took to type my underlines and notes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. ENJOY!!
THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol
How are you doing with your 2013 New Years Resolutions? Resolutions are usually made to solve a problem--get better organized, stop smoking, lose weight, exercise, be a better parent, spouse, friend, etc. In due course, after focusing on the problem and possible solutions, the solution of your problem will be revealed to you and the correct course of action indicated, which you must follow immediately and unquestioningly. There must be no hesitation on your part, no mental reservation, no deliberation. You must receive the message from the subconscious freely, and after understanding it, you must act on it at once.Your problem may be one that cannot be solved in above manner. You may, instead feel some mysterious force luring you at intervals to do certain things that seem to have no special significance or logical connection. Nevertheless, you must continue to believe in the power and wisdom of the subconscious, and obediently perform the seemingly irrelevant things. It is the act of believing that is the starting force or generating power that leads to accomplishment. Great orators and writers are often amazed at the power of the subconscious to furnish them with a steady flow of thoughts. Repetition - the repeating of certain mantras, words, formulas, etc. used in all religions - works as well in solving your problem. It is the power of suggestion that starts the machinery into operation or causes the subconscious mind to begin its creative work - and right here is where the affirmations and repetitions play their part. It's the repetition of the same chant, the same affirmations that leads to belief and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen. This subtle force of the repeated suggestion overcomes our reason, acting directly on our emotions and our feelings, and finally penetrating to the very depths of our subconscious minds. It is the basic principle of all successful advertising. Next month we'll discuss the importance of attitude in handling our lives.

TAKE A BREAK AND LAUGH ABOUT IT.....
|
O.K. Here goes..... A bank robber, whose face is covered by a mask, enters a bank and, at gun point, forces the teller to fill a sack full of money.
As he leaves the bank, the security guard reaches out and pulls the mask off the robber exposing his face.
The robber shoots the guard, and then looks at those in the bank and notices a customer staring directly at him and he immediately shoots the customer.
He then shouts out, "Did anyone else see my face ?"
There was total silence for a minute and then an elderly gentleman timidly raised his hand and says.."I think my wife got a pretty good look."
