Traditional Irish Blessing

May there always be work for your hands to do,

May your purse always hold a coin or two.

May the sun always shine on your windowpane,

May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.

May the hand of a friend always be near you,

May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

Happy January,

Gail and Ed

MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A VOLUNTEER

HELPING TO MAKE CHILDREN'S DREAMS COME TRUE

In a recent Aetna medicare brochure, an article appeared which tells the story of a retiree who is a perfect example of the value and the satisfaction of volunteering.

"Over the past decade Elinor Jones, 76, has been a go-to-volunteer for the Make-A-Wish foundation (wish.org) branch near her home in Yarmouth, Maine.

"This isn't the first volunteer work this former bank officer, mother of two and grandmother of two has done over the years. But her current focus is helping a 3 1/2-year-old girl who recently had a liver transplant plan her dream day.

"Before the day can take place, Jones spends a long time visiting with the girl and getting to know her. It can take a year to set up the details.

"For Jones, the best part of this volunteer work is seeing a child's face when his or her wish comes to fruition. 'Connecting to kids has always been important to me,' Jones says. 'When you read the thank-you notes and see the photos after the event, it's so inspirational.'

"Jones' family is all for it. Her granddaughter, who just graduated from college, may even follow in her footsteps. 'She told me the other day that she'd like to volunteer for Make-A-Wish someday, too.'"

ADVICE: Take action. "Call any organization you're interested in, whether it's Big Brothers Big Sisters or Make-A-Wish, and see if they need help," Jones suggests. "Chances are they'll need you in one way or another.

In the words of Elinor Jones, "Volunteering KEEPS ME BUSY, makes me feel HEALTHY and helps my HEART feel full."

YOUR LEGACY RECORDED

Your LEGACY Recorded

"You understand your life better if you share it piece by piece with other people . . . Something happens during the telling that goes beyond what is achieved by the remembering alone. . . New experiences become reminders of feelings and events that we have set aside and thoughts we had forgotten . . . as each new session builds on previous sessions." - Dr. James Birren, Ph.D., Psychology Today. The result is not only greater self understanding for each participant, but also a stronger bond among family members.

BOOK REVIEW

THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol

Claude Bristol's book
, The Magic of Believing, is another of the most influential books in my library. It was well worth the time it took to type my underlines and notes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.  ENJOY!!

THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol

With the New Year here, many of us will make resolutions for 2013--promises we make to ourselves to improve our lives for ourselves and for those we love. Having a basic understanding of how our conscious and subconscious minds work may help in the realization of our desires.

The chief powers of the conscious mind are reason, logic, judgment, and conscience. Our conscious mind is the result of our physical necessities and likewise our guide in the struggle with our environment. Its highest function is that of reasoning.

Our subconscious is our source of power. It is rooted in instinct. It is a power-house of energy enabling us to recover strength and courage. Basically, the subconscious embodies the feeling and wisdom of the past, the awareness and knowledge of the present, and the thought and vision of the future.

The powers of the subconscious are intuition, emotion, certitude, inspiration, suggestion, deduction, imagination, organization, and of course, memory and dynamic energy.

The subconscious maintains and preserves physical well-being, and in times of emergency it springs into immediate action.

When you make your New Year's Resolutions, you must first be sure that you are asking for something that is rightfully yours to have and is within your ability to handle, for the subconscious manifests itself only according to the capabilities of the person.

You must have patience and absolute faith. The subconscious mind will not take the trouble to work for those who do not believe in it.

Next, in conveying your need to the subconscious, it must be in the spirit - that the work has already been done. Thus, while it is necessary for you to feel and think yourself successful, it is important for you to go one step further and actually see yourself as already successful.

Whatever your resolutions for the New Year, see, feel and believe that they are already in existence. Change your thoughts, and you will change your world.

Next month you will read about strategies to use in order to best utilize the conscious and subconscious minds.

Ways to Find Your Passion

As you step into 2013, ask yourself the following questions. The answers may contain the beginning of an idea for your retirement passion.

* How satisfied are you with the life you are living?
* Do you have any big, unfulfilled dreams?
* What are you building? (What ideas/contributions do you want to be remembered for?)
* Are all your important relationships in harmony?

TAKE A BREAK AND LAUGH ABOUT IT.....

Several days ago as I left a meeting at a hotel; I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down. I was looking for my keys. They were not in my pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing.

Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition.

My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen.

As I burst through the door, I came to a terrifying conclusion. His theory was right. The parking lot was empty.

I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all, "Honey," I stammered; I always call him "honey" in times like these. "I left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen."

There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard his voice. He barked, "I dropped you off!"

Now it was my time to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me."

He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this policeman I have not stolen your car."

Yep, it's the golden years!!

HOPE THIS IS JUST HUMOR FOR THE DISTANT FUTURE!!!
