Greetings! This past week I listened to an audio workshop which contained information on "The Impostor Syndrome," to which I could definitely relate.
The term was first used by psychology professor Pauline Rose Clance and psychotherapist Suzanne Imes, and what it relates to is that feeling many bright, competent people have where they do not experience their own capabilities, believing instead that they have managed to somehow fool others into thinking they are more competent than they "know" themselves to be.
Books have been written on this for men and for women, although women tend to experience it more than men. Gloria Steinhem has stated on many occasions how she was always shocked people paid attention to her and thought she was doing such a great job. In the book, The Impostor Syndrome for Women, I read years ago, I was delightfully surprised to be in such fine, famous company.
Many times I've been in positions where I've looked out over an audience and thought to myself, "Don't they know I haven't a clue?"
Many years ago, at a school board meeting the second meeting night of my presidency, we were firing a beloved, yet very undisciplined untenured teacher. He had 39 counts against him, including taking kids to Princeton without their parents' or school's knowledge to protest something. The audience was packed, literally hundreds of people, TV cameras, police and lots of kids awaiting the vote.
I looked out at the silent group when I began talking and again heard that inner voice, "Why are they listening to me? I have no idea what I'm doing." And, of course, I was thoroughly prepared but that didn't matter--not when you suffer from The Imposter Syndrome.
With more and more exposures, the syndrome quiets down, hiding under the surface, but every now and then, it pops up, reminding me of the importance of being totally prepared.
Surprisingly, the Impostor Syndrome doesn't diminish what I do nor does it hinder my progress or detract from my message. Over the years, I have learned to regard the Syndrome as a positive.
Because it is there, deep in my mind, I am never unprepared, and I never take for granted that because I've given this talk before, I can do it without adequate preparation this time. For me, it's a motivator, a reminder of how important it is to be the best that I can be.
Have any of you ever experienced this phenomenon?
Happy, happy, Gail

PROMOTING YOUR SEMINARS
|
by Gail Cassidy
For many presenters, designing, mastering and delivering the program are the fun parts of the business. For others, promotion is the fun part. Whichever segment of the business you most enjoy, both are equally important.
You may want to start with an inexpensive brochure, one you can create on the computer and then have copies made. Start collecting brochures from those who work in home-owned businesses, small companies, and in large corporations. By amassing quantities of brochures, you will be able to see what appeals to you and what does not. Creating a brochure enables you to crystallize your thoughts and put them on paper. From your brochure you can create your 30 second elevator speech, so when someone asks what you do, you can immediately respond with clarity.
My first one-page brochure was a piece I started with many years ago before I even had my own company name. You can see that it was simple and inexpensive. If you can add graphics, that's a plus, but keeping it black and white makes the cost very low. This is how the first one looked:
BE THE BEST THAT YOU CAN BE!!
HOW?
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:(1) DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO? IF IN DOUBT, LOOK INTO
DISCOVER YOUR PASSION This is an all-day workshop designed for those desiring to discover their "passion" or "mission" in life. It is designed to help you figure out the best occupation for you. You could be looking for your ideal vocation or avocation. This is also appropriate for students about to enroll in college or about to embark on a career after high school or college.
Class members will be introduced to a technique which will capture their thoughts and feelings and will enable them to follow the philosophy which says, "Find what you love to do and never have to work a day in your life." Fee: $75 each
(2) DO YOU HAVE THE LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE? IF NOT, LOOK INTO
SELF-IMAGING FOR SUCCESS
This two-day course emphasizes building self-esteem by experiencing improved communication skills, listening skills, goal setting skills, time management skills, organizing and presentation skills. Participants learn how to acquire a professional presence, how to control attitude and level of enthusiasm, plus develop leadership skills. Participants will be videotaped at selected sessions.
The objectives of this program for the participant are: To develop skills desired in order to be the person he/she wants to be; to learn how to control attitude in order to be the person he/she wants to be; and to learn the basic interpersonal principle that all human beings respond to. Fee: $150 each
(3) ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THE IMPRESSION YOU MAKE IN YOUR INTERVIEWS? IF IN DOUBT, LOOK INTO
INTERVIEWING SKILLS AND IMPRESSIONS
Because we can't make a second first impression, we have to be prepared to make the best possible first impression. In this all-day workshop, participants will learn how to prepare for the interview, how to project composure, how to get ready for questions most asked by interviewers, and how to follow up. How important is preparation, listening and body language in an interview? This will be an interactive program, part of which will be videotaped Fee: $75 each
