Greetings! I've battened down the hatches, removed all outside potential projectiles, and have now nestled in my home away from the shore, awaiting Tropical Storm Hanna who is expected to visit in a few hours, bringing her full fury with her. If she does bring high winds, the electricity may go out, in which case, if I don't get this newsletter done now, you may not be reading it tomorrow.
My husband, Tom, is missing Hanna's hurrah as he flew out yesterday to Glenwood Springs, CO. to visit our daughter, Lynne. Today they're going to the annual dog competition--Border Collies from around the world herding sheep around obstacles and into pens, all from the whistle commands of their owners--very impressive!
As we all settle into our fall routines, business opportunities and growth once again become top priority.
Whatever business you are in, ask yourself what you could do for your customers that would incorporate or represent some aspect of your business. What can you teach prospective customers that would make their lives or businesses better? You know more about something than the average person. What is it? And how can you put it in a form of a seminar or talk?
Think about your local Rotary Club or Chamber of Commerce. They are always looking for programs. What do you know that they would be interested in hearing about? These unpaid 20-30 minute talks are a good place to practice. Rotary needs 52 speakers a year, one for every week. When I was the Rotary Program Chairperson, if I found someone who could walk and talk, I'd sign them up.
Everybody wants to improve some aspect of their lives. What can you do to help them make that improvement? Think about it. Once you experience the satisfaction of speaking to a group, you'll be hooked--and your business will be positively affected.

Feature Article: PROFIT FROM YOUR PASSION

Have you ever heard the term "reticular activation system?" Sounds special, doesn't it? Everyone has one, and everyone uses theirs. What it is is a part of our brain which becomes activated once we are consciously looking for something. When I worked for IBM, I could go into an account, and while looking straight ahead, see peripherally any and all IBM equipment they had. Similarly, years ago I decided to buy a Honda. Suddenly, every car that caught my eye was a Honda. You become unconsciously aware of whatever it is your mind is on. I'm sure you've experienced this.
My reticular activation system has been activated since I started writing this newsletter again. I constantly hear stories about people who are fulfilling their passion, people who have discovered their passion, people who are taking a chance to do what they want to do. Oprah says the words, discover your passion, almost every time I watch her program.
As a result of my RAS (reticular activation system), I've decided to start backwards in case you are way ahead of me. If you already know what your passion is, the steps are the same to reach that goal as they are to reach any goal. In fact, if your goal is to lose weight, stop smoking, change jobs, whatever, the following procedures, except for number one, are applicable.
I end my new Profit From Your Passion e-book as follows:
In spite of your best intentions, how many times have you resolved to do something, and you just didn't do it? You make excuses--"I'll start tomorrow, after the kids go to camp, when my in-laws leave, after the holidays, after I lose weight, when I have enough money, when I'm on vacation..." Or you say you can't start now because of your kids, your sick aunt, husband, wife, father, friends, etc. We all can relate. We've all done it, but now it's time to change.
Today you have the opportunity to make a huge difference in your life. Let's review what you have to do to make your new life happen:
1. COMPLETE THIS MANUAL NOW! Take responsibility for all that goes on in your life, and, if necessary, delegate tasks to others so you can get do your work right now.
2. CLARIFY YOUR VISION. Have a picture in your head of your passion (goal) and how you will implement it. Be clear on what you want to do and how it will look and feel. If you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you get there?
Be aware of the particular value(s) this vision validates, and be sure your goals do not violate any of your most important values--internal or external.
3. WRITE YOUR VISION/PASSION (goal) ON A CARD. Read it every morning and every night. Attach an emotion of excitement to your reading. Eventually you won't need to look at the card. You'll be able to recite with from memory, accompanied with that great feeling of excitement that permeates your body.
By the way, it is the feeling you remember, not the words.
4. MAKE A LIST OF WHAT YOUR PASSION WILL COST. What are you willing to give up?--a little television at night, a weekend or two, shopping, reading novels, sleeping late. Everything has a price. What are you willing to pay to have your dream come true?
5. IDENTIFY WITH YOUR PASSION. Live as if your passion has been put into effect. Feel the excitement of the journey. The journey is where the excitement lies. Follow the words of St. Jerome, "Begin to be now what you will be hereafter."
6. KEEP THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AT BAY. Each time a negative thought pops into your head, say "Cancel-Cancel" The first cancel is for the thought; the second is for the recognition of the thought. Remember, thoughts have energy.
7. TELL YOUR DREAMS ONLY TO THOSE WHO WILL BE SUPPORTIVE. You don't need any nay sayers at this point. Life has more than enough of them. A little negativity from those you care for can open the door to a flood of self-sabotaging doubt.
8. COMMIT TO YOUR DREAM--STAY FOCUSED. Keep the picture in your mind of how your life will look when you implement your passion. Establish a system so that every day you are reminded of where you are going. Do this by having cards posted around the house and/or office, lists of steps to take, recorded motivational information, quotes, pictures, your columns listing experience, skills, knowledge, and gifts--anything necessary to keep you on track--STAY FOCUSED.
9. PRACTICE YOUR RELAXATION/VISUALIZATION EVERY DAY. This daily routine is good for you physically and mentally and has the added benefit of moving you closer to your dream.
10. KNOW THAT YOU CAN BE WHAT YOU WANT TO BE. Know it in the depths of your heart. Think of Einstein's words, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." and the words of Norman Vincent Peale, "Change your thoughts and you change your world." And one last author, Wayne Dyer, wrote "You are what you choose today." Choose wisely, believe in your dream, and it will come to be.
Keep your reticular activation system activated at all times. Follow at least nine of these ten principles, and I promise you that you will profit from your passion. And wouldn't it be nice if you could share this seminar with others? You can!
A five-day already prepared Profit From Your Passion seminar is already ready and waiting for you. "Fun, informative, and fast-paced" is the best way to describe the program. Give it a try!
