Greetings!

For those of you who have done in-person talks, seminars, or workshops, you know that you should have only one major objective to convey to your audience. The title of your presentation usually reveals your intent. As a result of last week's session one teleseminar, I quickly learned that that principle holds true for all types of presentations--in-person or on the telephone. (Duh, what was a thinking!)

In my note to you last week, I  mentioned that a "beta" teleseminar is
one where the content and handouts stay the same, but the timing may need to be adjusted. WRONG! Most of the teleseminars I've done have related either to discovering or profiting from your passion. Each one had a clear intent: 1) of helping people find their passion or 2) of helping people find a way to make money from their passion.

My experience Monday clearly reminded me that I can effectively have only one primary intent. For this class the intent now is to work at improving participants' speaking. Originally I had intended the teleseminar to be for those who wanted to teach their employees or others and to improve their own skills.

It makes sense. As many times as I have taught speaking and imaging, I have never taught an actual 14-week seminar to students and teachers at the same time--one or the other, but not both--lesson learned as regards teleseminars!

I look forward to Monday's class to see if "intent" indeed does make a difference. I'll let you know.

I would love input from you regarding this weekly newsletter. Is it helpful? Too long? Too varied? Is there something you would like to see covered? If so, please drop me an email at gail@coachability.com, and I'll see what I can do.

Enjoy this great weather!!

Happy, happy,
Gail

BUTTERFLIES

Experiencing butterflies before speaking is unrelated to whether or not you should hold seminars or give talks. Some outstanding speakers I know experience varying degrees of angst before  speaking, even though they appear very comfortable and confident.

Take a moment and picture yourself sitting in the front row of the conference room in a magnificent hotel. You are about to be introduced. As you sit in your chair awaiting to be announced as the next speaker, your stomach is filled with the flutter of butterflies and your knees feel a little weak, and you may even wonder why you ever agreed to do this presentation, but, from previous experiences, you know you will feel fantastic when it is over and when you hear the applause and accolades from the audience.

THE LOVE OF THE SPORT

Criterion number one, "the love of the "sport," wanting to share your knowledge, hobby, or special product that will benefit the listeners. This desire to share information keeps speakers coming back time and again, in spite of the initial fluttering discomfort.  Consider nervousness an asset.  As long as it occurs, you know you will never not be totally prepared.

YUL BRENNER

Yul Brenner who starred in 10,000 performances of "The King of Siam" got nervous all 10,000 times.  To alleviate the discomfort, he pushed up against the back stage wall--an isometric exercise.  With all of the muscles tensed, the relaxation released the tension from his muscles as well as his nervous tension.

YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE

The second criterion relates to information or knowledge that you have that can be of benefit to someone else.  For what type of information do people come to you for advice?  For example, my friends or kids never ask me for advice about finances, fixing or buying a car, insurance or anything to do with money.

What do you know more about than most people?  Do you have a hobby or interest that you've read about and/or practiced?  Are you trained in an area that could benefit others?  Find your niche and work on developing it.

NEXT WEEK: Next week I'll cover the first two of ten characteristics you need in order to seriously consider being in the seminar business.

Gail Recommends: A Ready-Made, Fun Seminar

Discover Your Passion
One ready-made, fun, and popular seminar/workshop you could deliver is Discover Your Passion. Everybody wants to make a difference, and if you are doing what you were meant to do, you will make a difference.

I hope you all completed last week's exercises. If you found something you'd like to share, please send me an e-mail and tell me your story.

WELCOME

For new subscribers or course participants, welcome to an opportunity to change your life, to make every day exciting and rewarding, to discover your passion and earn money doing what you love, and to learn how to bring success into your life.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Why not make it even better than yesterday?  Why not direct your future toward the end goal of doing what you love, loving what you do, and earning money doing so?

It is possible, I promise!

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE?

Po Bronson, in his new book, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE? says "We all have passions if we choose to see them.  Most of us don't get epiphanies.  We don't get clarity.  Our purpose doesn't arrive neatly packaged as destiny.  We only get a whisper.  A blank, nonspecific urge.  That's how it starts."

"Do what you love and you will never have to work another day in your life" is one of my favorite sayings.

SPARE TIME?

Think about it.  What do you do in your spare time that you would not mind doing all day long?

Once you have zeroed in on what it is you would like to do all day long, you have taken the first step toward achieving your goals.

STEP ONE

Recognizing what you most enjoy doing is Step Number One.  Don't worry if your desire is different or unusual.  Maybe it is something you enjoy doing but are totally unprepared to do, such as acting, writing, drawing, teaching, working in the medical or legal field, or whatever comes to mind.

Emerson once said, "There is nothing capricious about nature."  In other words, you would not have a compelling desire to do something if you did not have the ability to achieve that desire.  If you cannot carry a tune, you probably do not have an overwhelming desire to be an opera singer.

STEP TWO

If recognizing what you most enjoy doing is Step One to the achievement of your goals, Step Two is belief that you can achieve your goals.  More about the importance of belief later.

You, too, can bring more happiness and satisfaction into your life by merely taking the time to do an intensive self-inventory and then acting on the results of what you discover.

Discovering your passion in life and then doing it will bring you more satisfaction and happiness than all of the money and power in the world.

WAYNE DYER

I believe we can obtain in life what we are truly seeking--consciously or unconsciously. Wayne Dyer in his book Believing It Is Seeing It explains that what you believe enables you to bring that belief into your life and see it.

Marsha Sinetar authored an intriguing book on the subject, entitled Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow.  The title says it all.

One of Buddha's primary recommendations for achieving enlightenment is discovering your right livelihood.  And at the other end of the spectrum, John D. Rockefeller believed that the power to make money was a gift from God, which is simply another way of saying, "Do what you love and the money will follow" (Breathnach 9/24).

In a wonderfully motivating book, Doing What You Love, Loving What You Do, Dr.  Robert Anthony says, "Finding and creating your life's work, even if it is entirely different from what you have done most of your life, will bring you more happiness and money than any other single action you can take."

If you are a dentist and hate it, why waste the rest of your life going to a job you hate?  Find out what you truly love to do.  How?  Listen to your own intuition.  Go inside yourself and tap the vast, rich potential of your own mind.  Listen to yourself.

Become aware of what makes you feel excited or pleased or satisfied.

LISTEN TO YOUR HUNCHES

Another word for intuition, hunches are everyone's natural ability to perceive beyond their five senses and logic alone.

Unfortunately, we usually turn off those hunches because they may not be able to be validated.  Learn to trust your own decisions, even those that result from your intuition.

THE QUESTION FOR THE WEEK IS "WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?"

Have a great week!

THOUGHTS TO PONDER

· Nobody rises to low expectations. -Unknown

· The road to success is always under construction.   -Arnold Palmer

· Look at a man the way he is, and he only become worse. Look at him as if he were what he could be, and then he becomes what he should be.  -Johann Goethe

· Success is not counted by how high you have climbed but by how many you have brought with you. -Will Rose

· To mentor means to assist a valued mentoree move from where he or she is to where he or she wants to go.  -Unknown

· Mentoring is about two people of different ages and backgrounds, talking together and learning from each other. -Kaplan/Newsweek guide on "How to Be a GREAT MENTOR."

· In the 2003 State of the Union Address, President Bush said, "Government will support the training and recruiting of mentors, yet it is the men and women of America who will fill the need. One mentor, one person, can change a life forever--and I urge you to be that one person."

· A research study provided these results on mentoring. "Children who met with a mentor three times a month for one year were 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27 percent decrease in initiating alcohol use, 37 percent decrease in lying to parents, 52 percent less likely to skip school, and 33 percent less likely to get into fights."  (Statistics from a nationwide review of Big Brother/Big Sister's Programs by Tierney & Grossman)

· Why has mentoring grown into a social movement supported by government, schools, businesses and religious institutions alike?  Because it works.

· Recognize that a mentor is a caring and concerned person. A mentor is a listener and a guide.
