A three part show featuring voices from folk art, community and film
|
|
The human voice communicates who we are through the telling of our stories, our histories, cultures, visions and perceptions of the world around us. In this three-part exhibition, Blue Door Gallery exhibits facets of contemporary voice through folk art, community voices and film.
FOLK ART: In this extraordinary exhibition, folk art is represented as an artisanal lens through which to convey our histories and cultural traditions as well as to uniquely portray our current perceptions of our community. Ruth Geneslaw carves Basswood for her astute social and political commentaries while Pat Slaven employs traditional piecing in her contemporary quiltmaking.
COMMUNITY: Our South Gallery will feature voices from new and emerging talent from Yonkers, in art and spoken word.
FILM: Our North Gallery will feature screenings of short films on voice, art and artists. Monique Avakian's video performances speak to her "having a voice/losing a voice/morphing a voice/gaining a voice as a creative person living in a culture increasingly dominated by text and machines."

IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL: The Mystery of Henry Darger
2005, Directed by Jessica Yu
It is appropriate in the context of an exhibition centered on folk art and community voices to screen this skillful and shockingly beautiful combination of animation and documentary material about the intensely private and self-taught Henry Darger, a true outsider artist. Who knows a Henry Darger may live among the people of Yonkers yet to be discovered. Witness a remarkable film that imparts life to his extraordinary achievement and extensive body of work.
This innovative feature length documentary, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jessica Yu and produced by Susan West, explores the parallel lives of legendary outsider artist Henry Darger. Reclusive Janitor by day, visionary artist by night. Darger's 15,000 page novel details exploits of the Vivian Girls, seven angelic sisters who lead a rebellion against godless, child-enslaving men. Featuring the voices of Dakota Fanning (I am Sam, Cat In The hat) and Larry Pine (The Royal Tenenbaums), the music of Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal and the work of a team of animators, this wholly original film tells the story of a hidden universe.
