THE CHOIR SCHOOL OF CAPE ANN AT ST. JOHN'S CHURCH makes its final appearance of this year at a service THIS Sunday afternoon, June 1 at 4 pm. Music, awards, followed by Ice Cream! Everyone is welcome.

MUSICAL MUSING

The choir anthem is "Draw us in the Spirit's Tether" by Harold Friedell. I first heard this anthem (not part of my Lutheran upbringing) at Christ Church, Hamilton in the early 1980's. Ned Rorem's opening voluntary "There is a Spirit That Delights to Do No Evil ..." is from his "A Quaker Reader", a set of pieces quoting writings of notable Quakers. Rorem grew up as a Quaker. This tune is "bestowed as a balm to James Naylor who perished so painfully in London" in 1660 in the face of religious intolerance. This is the same year that Mary Dyer died on the gallows of Boston Common. Composer of the closing voluntary, "Trumpet Tune in C," David N. Johnson was educated at Curtis in Philadelphia and taught at St. Olaf College, Syracuse University and Arizona State University. He was organist at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix.

Tongues of fire THE DAY OF PENTECOST IS JUNE 8 WEAR RED

We will celebrate PENTECOST with hanging tongues of fire. We need your FLAME inscribed with prayers and decorated this week! Leave them on the table in the Parish Hall. They will be hung for next Sunday.

From Annette Biggar: "I'm home; Pain is fairly well controlled; I would welcome a card or a call, but not a visit at this point; we are set for food; and continued prayers are always welcome."

MISSION INSTITUTE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE:

The Mission Institute has launched their new website as part of a new and developing collaborative initiative of Episcopal City Mission, Episcopal Divinity School and the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. The Mission Institute was created, according to its mission statement, "to provide individuals, congregations and communities with innovative learning opportunities that nurture leaders, advance spiritual growth and support the flourishing of just, healthy societies." The new website will spotlight the Mission Institute's own programs, according to director Diane D'Souza, but will also be a tool for connecting people with events, resources and inspiration from other sources.
EPISCOPAL CITY MISSION DIVESTS ENDOWMENT FROM FOSSIL FUELS:

The Episcopal City Mission (ECM) has voted to divest its $16-million endowment from exposure to fossil fuels. The unanimous vote of the ECM Board of Directors took place at its May 8 meeting after months of research, reflection and deliberation that included thorough analysis of the potential financial impact of divestment.

CALL TO PRAYER:

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has called the Episcopal Church to prayer and action for South Sudan. During the past five months, South Sudan has faced its greatest challenge since becoming the world's newest nation in July 2011, when it seceded from the north in a referendum on independence following almost half a century of civil war. Jefferts Schori says she would like Episcopalians "to learn more about the situation, to be in contact with their legislators, to pray, and to reach out to the Sudanese in their own neighborhoods." You can begin with this  video: http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/ens/2014/05/13/video-presiding-bishop-calls-the-church- to-prayer-for-south-sudan/.

EPISCOPALIANS ON FACEBOOK:

Are you one to while away the time online? Then you might want to check out this link: www.facebook.com/groups/Episcopalians/ The conversation covers the gamut-from folks thinking of joining the church to someone wondering if it's okay to sing the Alleluia Chorus at a funeral to a deep discussion of stress and depression among the clergy to queries about theology to celebrations of the life of Maya Angelou to recommendations of books and music. Basically a little something for everyone interested in the Episcopal tradition.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH MEMES:

For the more lighthearted among us, there are "memes," words superimposed on photos that are posted online. Sometimes the photos and messages are somber, especially those marking national tragedies. But most often they are amusing references to church custom. Check it out: www.facebook.com/EpiscopalChurchMemes
