LENTEN DEVOTIONS AND RESOURCES: Ash Wednesday, on March 5, invites us to the observance of a holy Lent--the season of penitence, reconciliation and renewal that leads to Easter. For those taking on a devotional practice during Lent, there is a collection of home grown and locally recommended resources available on the diocesan website, www.diomass.org.

FOUR CHOIRS FESTIVAL THIS SUNDAY
Our Choristers will participate at a program with choirs from Salem, Andover, and Chelmsford this Sunday at 4 pm. The event is at Grace Church, 385 Essex St, Salem, MA. This is a great opportunity for our kids to make music with somewhat older groups. Please do come!
I've been heartened to receive such enthusiastic response to music notes over the last several weeks. I'll endeavor to keep them coming.
MUSIC THIS SUNDAY:
Today is the final Sunday before Lent starts. So we'll go out with a bang and lots of good music to sing and hear.
THE CHOIR sings 2 anthems, a short setting by Knut Nystedt (99 years old this year!!!) of the words of the story of the Transfiguration, heard in the Gospel reading. With Carol McKenzie, soprano, we'll hear the Gospel setting "True Light" at the end of communion (in lieu of a Psalm this week).
"What is Mark doing with that squeezebox, during the Psalm singing?" Someone apparently missed the explanation made several times since the acquisition of the SHRUTI BOX last December. This instrument was invented on the Indian sub-continent during the 19th century as a tool for providing a drone for meditation. Using parts of British reed organs brought by the missionaries, they created a very simple instrument. We first heard this when Ana Hernandez came years ago. We use in our Liturgy based on similar historical instruments used to provide drones: hurdy-gurdies, monochords, and Bible-regals early in the 11-15th centuries.
ORGAN MUSIC for the opening is based upon a Scandinavian Christmas hymn (sung during Communion) which explores many of the themes of transcendence begun in the Gospel reading. The closing voluntary is the great C major Fugue of Bach, which uniquely begins as played entirely on the manuals 'till the end when the Pedal comes in with the theme at half the tempo of the fugue. The musical term for this is "augmentation."

ADULT FORUM THIS SUNDAY
In Christianity for the Rest of Us, Diana Butler Bass describes Christians in vibrant congregations as a "mobile city of pilgrims," journeying together without maps. Yet signposts point the way in the form of practices, "the activities drawn from our tradition that we do together in community." Join us as the conversation shifts to the practices of vital communities, beginning with the fundamental practice of welcoming the stranger. Elizabeth Redmond facilitates, March 2, 9:15 am.
NEXT WEEK'S ADULT FORUM: In Christianity for the Rest of Us, Diana Butler Bass describes Discernment as 'listening for the truth.' "The Easter life consists in finding our true identity in God and in knowing that God has given us 'something to do'." What has God given you, and all of us, to do? How did you find it? How and when did the community of the church help in this process? Join us as the conversation sorts through our own stories of discernment and we explore the unexpected possibilities of "Listening for God". Dave Prentice facilitates, March 9, 9:15 am.

"COME AND SEE"
A CELEBRATION OF CHILDREN! St. John's Church is offering an interactive service on Saturday, March 29th at 4 pm, to celebrate the children of Gloucester, the children in our parish, and the child in all of us. Joyful music, art, and storytelling will accompany our liturgy including a visit from Noah! We welcome everyone who is, or has ever been a child, who knows the worship of prayer and play. As was in the case of the Earth Day Service and The Nativity of Mary Service, we will once again transform the sanctuary to create an inviting, transitory space of enchantment. This will be the third in what we hope will become semiannual happenings.
