BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS The second annual Blessing of the Animals will take place on St. Francis Day, Friday, October 4, at 5pm. Last year was a great beginning, but we want to welcome more animals and their people to this year's service. Invite your friends - it's an easy, very friendly way to introduce people to St. John's. Dogs on leashes, cats in crates, birds in cages, turtles and whatever in boxes and everyone will get along fine. Last year there were twelve dogs and not a single bark. Please come and bring your friends, both human and animal.

FESTIVE EVENSONG- In Celebration of our 150th Anniversary
Please join us this Sunday, October 6th at 4:00 pm, Prelude at 3:45 pm
Reception to Follow to reconnect with old friends and past clergy.

MUSIC NOTES
Jesus and the disciples sang a psalm at the Last Supper, and, when he was called
to read in the synagogue, he chanted the scriptures as he had done since his Bar Mitzvah. Today's reading from the Lamentations of Jeremiah has been sung by Christians to this ancient chant for 2000 years. Jews still use a version of it in the synagogue for the same text - each verse begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In this beautiful melody, we catch an echo of the music that Jesus knew and sang.
ADULT FORUM Sunday at 9:15am in the Thompson Room.
Listening within all things for the life of God. Celtic Christianity offers us the image of the God within rather than the God without. The forum this Sunday invites us to share ways in which we find God within our daily lives, in the things that happen to us, and in the abundance of the created world that is our home.
Please visit our new website! The address has not changed: StJohnsGloucester.org
Thanks and praise to Paul McGeary for creating and maintaining the original site. Thanks to Mark Murray-Brown, Lin York-Robbins and Mark Nelson for leading in the creation of the new site. Thanks to you who helped fund it. Thanks to all of you who contributed content. But, the work is not done, like the church, the website is alive, and will welcome your comments, suggestions and most of all your pictures and your program descriptions. RED DOORS A little research gives a number of varied and often related reasons for red doors: Red Doors
  • The blood of Christ, which is our entry into salvation. They also remind us of the blood of the martyrs, the seeds of the church.
  • The color of the Spirit: Pentecost.
  • Red is the sign of sanctuary, a church in which you can find protection.
  • A remembrance of the Passover story where the blood of the lambs decorated the doors of the Israelites protecting them.
  • Red indicates that the church is debt free: the mortgage has been burned!
  • The color red gleams like fire, showing the light and presence of the Holy Spirit for all who enter in.
Fall Clean Up

Hats off to the parishioners who came out in force to clean up St. John's churchyard last Saturday, reviving a parish tradition that had lapsed in recent years. We raked leaves and apples, weeded the flower beds, trimmed the shrubs, swept the parking lot and enhanced the street sign with a new autumn flower bed. A full truckload of spent vegetation went off to the city compost dump, and the workers were refreshed with cider and donuts. Among those lending a hand were Ernie Runnels, Karen Kasper, Gwen Kopka, Janie Brown, Jane Walsh, Elizabeth Redmond, Mark and Iona Murray- Brown, Joan and Carmine Gorga, Pete and Jan Goodwin, Ian Bedford, Bret Hays, Marcos Esqueda and Ellen, Martha Whitney and Paul McGeary.

Group Spiritual Direction Third Tuesday October 15 7-9pm Thompson Room
Group Spiritual Direction members meet to share our spiritual journeys following the format offered by the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation. This includes silence, sharing where God is present in our lives, prayerful listening, reflection and prayer "with a willingness to be present to God for one another." We meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 7-9pm in the Thompson Room. New members are welcomed each fall. Please offer a year's commitment and "the intention to rely on God, to seek God actively and wait for God's leading." "Hearing the spiritual journeys of others lends perspective to my journey. With support of my group and their prayers, I am more open to stepping out in faith."    quotes are from Group Spiritual Direction by Rose Mary Dougherty, S.S.N.D. New members are welcomed now for 2013-2014 If interested, please contact: Sarah Wetzel or Jim McCarthy 978-283-3833 sarah.wetzel@verizon.net
ANA AT ADYLNROOD
Ana Hernández Practicing Presence: How can we find God in one another? October 19 (Saturday 9:00 - 4:00) We'll begin by finding and nurturing God within us using simple chants and global songs as icons of divine presence. We'll find places of comfort and repose, and learn to negotiate the uncomfortable places, encouraging one another as icons of that presence, too. We will attend to the sense of how we sing what we sing, reflecting on the things we tell ourselves and others, and learning to make our lives a communal offering. This is the work of the Spirit at play. We will coax her from her hiding places. She will leap out and surprise us when we least expect it. Warning: You may have epiphanies in the context of group learning. Transformation, fun, and improvisation are highly likely to happen in a roomful of strangers. Program fee $75 (includes lunch)
COUNTRY CUPBOARD FAIR -NOVEMBER 23rd
Preparations continue for our annual fair on November 23rd. Crafters meet every Tuesday morning from 9-11 and all are welcome. We are also looking for volunteers to coordinate the following areas: Holiday Decorations ("gently used" ornaments and decorations of which we have many in the undercroft) and the Cookie Walk. If you are interested in either or have any questions, please contact Gwen Kopka or Adele Ervin.
Silent Auction items needed for our Holiday Fair.
Please consider a donation to St. Johns of any new or gently used items for the Auction.  We especially are looking for small antiques, beautiful works of art, unique crafts, distinctive books, or items that may entice people to bid.  Please bring your donation to the church office by November 10 to be sure to have them included in the bidding.  If you have any questions please see Catherine McGeary or Mary Cole.
Thank you.
BE JEWELED: Happy Autumn to you all. We hope you are enjoying these beautiful clear days! And now the time has come to ask for your help in adorning our lovely jewelry tables at the annual Country Fair on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Any gently used jewelry that you are no longer using would be very much appreciated - the earlier we get any contributions, the better we can present them. Any items can be dropped off at the office, Monday thru Thursday from 8 AM to noon. Thanking you in advance for your help, see you at the Fair!!!

Gloucester CERT (Citizen Emergency Response Team) would like to request your help spreading the word to your congregation and neighbors in Lanesville, Annisquam and Bayview about an important door to door safety pilot campaign focusing on the critical need for visible house numbers to aid emergency personnel to quickly locate your home in an emergency. The morning of October 19, teams, under the umbrella of Gloucester Emergency Management and comprised of Gloucester CERT volunteers, many of whom are your neighbors, will be visiting your neighborhood in a door to door effort to distribute fire safety preparedness literature with important contact information and requirements to ensure your homes have visible house numbers. Volunteers will be wearing green CERT vests and/or caps.
