News for You and Your Cat
May 1, 2014

Dear ,

Ingrid and AmberAllegra and Ruby like to think that they're pretty famous, and with almost 90,000 Conscious Cat readers each month and close to 50,000 Facebook fans, I suppose they're not entirely wrong. But they're not even close to the rarified feline stratosphere in which Lil BUB resides. With more than 700,000 Facebook fans, BUB has been capturing hearts around the world. I had a rare chance to interview BUB's "Dude," Mike Bridavsky. In this indepth interview, Mike shared with me how he first met BUB, talked about her public appearances and why she is such an inspiration, and explained about her physical challenges.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and with the warmer weather, it's important to be aware that cats can get heat stroke just like dogs and people. Know the signs of heat stroke, and how to prevent it.

Wishing you health, happiness and purrs,

Ingrid.

Exclusive Interview with Lil BUB's Dude

I never met Lil BUB in person, but I, like hundreds of thousands of others (BUB currently has more than 650,000 Facebook fans), fell in love with this amazing little cat via photos and videos. I hope to some day meet Lil BUB in person. She conveys a level of charisma on the printed page and in photos and videos unlike anything I've ever seen. I can't even imagine what it must be like to meet this special little cat in real life.

Since an in-person meeting is not in the cards right now, I had an opportunity to do the next best thing: I got to ask Lil BUB's "dude," Mike Bridavsky, some questions. Click through on the links to take you to each individual segment.

Part One: How it All Began

Mike talks about how he first met BUB, his other cats, and how BUB has changed his life.

Part Two: BUB and Her Adoring Public

Lil_Bub_taxi

Part Three: BUB's Challenges, and What Comes Next

Heat Stroke in Cats: Know the Signs

heat_stroke_in_cats

Even though heatstroke is more common in dogs than in cats, cats can get it, and it is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate veterinary attention.

Signs of heat stroke

  • Panting or rapid breathing
  • Restlessness
  • Drooling
  • Excessive grooming
  • Sweaty paws
  • Bright red gums and tongue
  • Vomiting
  • Stumbling
  • Unresponsiveness
  • High fever
  • Collapse
  • Extreme lethargy

What to do if your cat has heat stroke

Prompt treatment is of the essence - get your cat to a veterinarian immediately if you think she has heat stroke. While transporting the cat you can
  • Cover her with towels soaked in cold water
  • If your cat is conscious, try to get her to drink some cold water. You can use a syringe if possible.
  • Never use ice packs or immerse your cat in ice cold water to reduce body temperature, as this can cause shock.

How to prevent heat stroke

The best way to prevent heat stroke is to keep your cats inside. If your cat does go outside, make sure she has access to plenty of fresh, cold water, and shady areas. But even indoor cats may suffer from heat exhaustion on really hot days, especially in homes without air conditioning. Mews and Nips: World's Oldest Cat is a Tortoiseshell

Poppy, a 24-year-old tortoiseshell cat from Bournemouth, England, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest cat. Born in 1990, she was adopted by Marguerite Corner and her daughter Jacqui at the age of five. When she was ten, she went with Jacqui who had moved in with future husband Andy West. I doubt that anyone reading this blog needs convincing that cats are family members. In fact, for most of us, it's hard to understand that not everyone feels the way we do, but the fact of the matter is that cats (and dogs) were once wild animals. When I first heard about the new trend of cat cafés, my first reaction was one of slight alarm. Working as a cat sitter for over 12 years and before that working in a cat-only veterinary clinic, I was worried about cat welfare. Surely cats like to be on their [...] The post A Visit to Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium appeared first on The Conscious Cat. ...»

America's cats are facing a healthcare crisis. The findings of a feline health study conducted by Bayer Health Care found that 52% of America's 74 million cats are not receiving regular veterinary care. The actual number is probably much higher, since this study only captured data from cat guardians who do seek some veterinary care, [...] The post The Feline Health Care Crisis appeared first on The Conscious Cat. ...»
