Keep Your Cats Cool This Summer

The dog days of summer are just around the corner, and cats are just as susceptible to some of the dangers of hot weather as dogs and humans. Even if your cat doesn't go outside, you'll still want to take some precautions, especially on those really hot days, to protect her from the heat.

The following tips can help keep your cat comfortable:

Air conditioning and fans:
Many people turn up the thermostat or turn the air conditioning off altogether if they're gone from home all day. Keep in mind that during really hot days, your cat may be uncomfortable if the temperature gets too high, so adjust your settings accordingly. If you don't have air conditioning, use fans to cool things off. Keep ceiling fans running. Get some box fans or table-top fans. Make sure that the fans can't tip over. I don't recommend leaving box fans or table-top fans running when you're not at home.

Make sure your cat can get to the cooler spots in your home.
Basements are usually cooler than upstairs bedrooms. Hardwood or tile floors are cooler than carpet. Some cats may even hang out in the bathtub or sink during hot weather.

Open your windows to let the cool breezes in
(if there are any), but always make sure that screens are secured.

Brush frequently.
A well-groomed coat without tangles and mats will help keep your cat cool.

Fresh cold water:
Make sure your cat has access to fresh, cool water. A fountain is a great way to offer this. Periodically add some ice cubes to your cat's water bowl.

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Even though heat stroke is not as common in cats as it is in dogs, you're still going to want to watch for symptoms: panting, lethargy, drooling, fever, vomiting and collapse are all warning signs. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate veterinary attention.

Don't leave your cat in a parked car.
If you have to travel with your cat, make sure that you don't leave the carrier in a parked car, not even for a minute. Temperatures inside a car rise to dangerous levels very quickly, even with the windows cracked. By using common sense and keeping these tips in mind, you and your cats can enjoy a safe and happy summer. Do you have a tip for keeping cats cool during the summer months? Share it in a comment!

7 Habits of Happy Cats and Humans

7_habits_of_happy_humans_and_cats

Contrary to what many people believe, happiness is a choice. Happy people are happy because they make themselves happy. They maintain a mostly positive outlook, and practice habits that make their lives happier. Not surprisingly, our cats already practice many of these habits.

1. Live in the present.
Cats live in the moment. When they're lazing about in a sun puddle, they don't worry about when the next sun puddle will show up - they simply enjoy the pleasure of the warmth on their fur, right now, in this present moment.

2. Wake up at the same time every morning.
Have you ever noticed how many successful and happy people are early risers? Waking up at the same time each day keeps your circadian rhythm in balance, which keeps you calmer and more centered and also increased productivity.

3. Eat well.
Junk food may make you feel good for a brief period of time, but in the long run, it will make you feel sluggish, not to mention take a toll on your health. Everything you eat affects not just your physical, but also your emotional and mental health. Eating fresh, whole, minimally processed foods will keep human and feline minds and bodies in good shape.

4. Exercise. Regular exercise is one of the best ways I know of to stay happy and healthy, and this goes for humans and cats.

5. Meditate.
Even a five minute mini meditation at the beginning of your day can set the tone for a less stressful day. Better yet, take a few mini-meditation breaks during the day. 6. Practice gratitude. Gratitude makes you happy. Research by Dr. Robert Emmons of the University of California at Davis into the psychology of gratitude has shown that people who practice gratitude are 25% happier. They are more optimistic about the future and feel better about their lives.

7. Accept what is. One of the greatest sources of unhappiness is the inability to accept things as they are. Accepting what is, without wishing things were different, is is the key to living a positive, present life. What are some of your happiness habits? What have your cats taught you about happiness?

Signs of Illness in Cats

Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness, which is why regular veterinary exams are so important. All cats should get annual exams, and cats seven or older should be seen by a veterinarian twice a year. However, the most important person in keeping your cats healthy is you! You know your cat better than [...]The post Signs of Illness in Cats appeared first on The Conscious Cat....»

I approached reading Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology with apprehension. I find the thought of a cat going missing so gut-wrenching, it's just not something I want to think about a whole lot. But thankfully, Caroline Paul's cat Tibby wasn't lost forever - five weeks after he disappeared, he returned home, looking [...]The post Review: Lost Cat by Caroline Paul appeared first on The Conscious Cat....»

Feline obesity has become an epidemic: a staggering 53% of America's cats are considered overweight or obese. Obesity can lead to serious health problems in cats, including diabetes and kidney failure. Regular home-testing can help detect abnormal conditions at an early stage, enabling your cat to get timely veterinary treatment. This is especially important for cats, [...]The post Preventive Home Testing with PawCheck Helps Detect Feline Health Problems Early appeared first on The Conscious Cat....»

Hyperthyroidism is a common disease that typically affects middle-aged and older cats.  It is caused by an excess production of thyroid hormones, which are produced by the thyroid gland, located inside the cat's neck.  Thyroid hormones affect nearly all organs, which is why thyroid disease can sometimes cause secondary problems such as hypertension, heart and [...]The post Feline Hyperthyroidism and Cat Food: Exploring a Possible Connection appeared first on The Conscious Cat....»
