Why I Got Involved ...
June 4, 2016

By Ryan Whittman
President, MilkWorks Board of Directors

When my wife and I started trying for a family, I knew very little about breastfeeding. I knew that it was natural and free, but I assumed that, thanks to the miracles of modern science, formula was fine. I didn't have a strong preference either way. My wife did a lot of research and informed me that breastfeeding was the route we should go with our child(ren). I supported that decision because I figured I just saved a bunch of money without having to switch to Geico.

However, when our first son was born, we found out that this beautiful and natural thing that mothers and babies have been doing since the beginning of humanity isn't always easy ...

Give to Lincoln Day - Thank You!
Thank you to the Lincoln Community Foundation and the many sponsors and donors who made Give to Lincoln Day 2016 a success! We love the messages that we received in honor of, or in memory of, special people. Thanks for letting us be a part of your lives!

Meet Sami, a 2002 MilkBaby!

Shanon and Sami came to MilkWorks in 2002. MilkWorks was just over a year old, and our moms' groups were held on a sofa and a few chairs in our waiting area, right next to the weigh station. Our staff was small (less than 10), and there was no private insurance coverage for pumps or breastfeeding support......

Fighters, Dreamers and Doers
The Community Health Endowment's 2016  Annual Meeting with the Community will take place Wednesday, June 15, at 3 p.m. at the Bryan East Campus Plaza Conference Center, 1600 S. 48th Street. Six speakers will give inspiring, 400-second stories about their work on the front lines of making Lincoln a healthier community, including Julie Blasquez, a native of Bogota, Colombia, and one of MilkWorks Community Breastfeeding Educators. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Breastfeeding in Every Neighborhood
Meet Khamisa Abdalla: Khamisa is originally from Sudan and came to Lincoln with her family in 2000. She is very involved in our community as an advocate for the Asian Community and Cultural Center and is also a Community Breastfeeding Educator.

Mothers may call or email Khamisa for breastfeeding support. She speaks all Arabic dialects as well as Nuba and English. Her phone is 402-477-3446 and her email is khamisa@lincolnasiancenter.org
Breastfeeding Research
Dr. Leeper was one of the first breastfeeding medicine specialists in the country. Below, she shares some of the latest research related to breastfeeding and its impact on our health:

Being breastfed decreases a baby's risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease later in life, most likely because breastfeeding is associated with a healthier gut microbiome.

Previously, research showed that "fecal transplants" (yes, taking intestinal contents from healthy person and placing them inside a sick person) helps to cure resistant overgrowth of the "bad" bacteria Clostridium difficile after antibiotic use. A recent study  took this a step further and found that fecal transplants were helpful for some patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), presumably by introducing a healthier set of bacteria to an affected person's microbiome.
