The Soapbox of Breastfeeding ...
By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director of MilkWorks
| Ann Seacrest |
As a community breastfeeding center, we like to educate the public about breastfeeding. Students from UNL who come to MilkWorks often leave amazed at what they learn about infant nutrition. But we also want to avoid being pushy. Our primary role is to support mothers who want to breastfeed, not tell them what they must do. Success is when we can help mothers navigate the unknowns of breastfeeding. Every once in a while, a study is released that makes it worthwhile to "get on my soap box" (as my children would say). In 2010, Pediatrics published a cost analysis that drew national attention. Researcher Dr. Melissa Bartick made the case that the US would save $13 billion and prevent 911 deaths per year if 90% of infants were breastfed exclusively for six months.
Dr. Bartick and her colleagues are now making a case for the health of mothers.

One Heck of a Slide!
|
| The Milkworks Staff
|
We want to extend a special thank you to Firespring for letting MilkWorks gather in their beautiful facility for our annual retreat. Their generosity allowed our staff to reflect upon the past year and focus on how we can continue to create a healthier community by helping mothers breastfeed their babies. Firespring, a local company that provides marketing expertise and website technology and support for small businesses/nonprofit organizations, opens up their wonderful space to non-profits for free. (Ask us about their slide - it's way too much fun!)

Third Annual Milk & Cookies
|
On a rainy June 8th, nearly 140 people joined together for a night full of desserts, cocktails and celebration. This year, $13,000 was raised for the Best Beginnings Fund, established so that no family in our community has to go without the breastfeeding support they need.
Thank you to everyone who supported our event through sponsorships, hosts, raffle tickets and attendance. A special thank you to Dr. Todd and Lisa Tessendorf for opening their home to so many supporters of MilkWorks.

| Liz and daughter modeling for babyworks in 2007! |
Liz Ring Carlson has served MilkWorks in many capacities - as a faithful member of our Board of Directors, chair of the Fund Development committee and die hard breastfeeding advocate. Liz also recently chaired the successful Milk & Cookies fundraising event. As Liz retires from our board of directors, MilkWorks extends our sincere appreciation. Thank you, Liz, for letting us use photos of you and your babies all over the place, and for all you've done for MilkWorks and breastfeeding mothers. You truly are a gem!

Formula Advertising - What Does It Mean?
|
Last month in her blog about the "Royal Baby Watch," Ann mentioned the placement of formula ads in People magazine. Recently, a study was published in the journal Birth exploring women's interpretation of formula advertising and the impact the ads have on their opinions of breastfeeding.
Study participants report that formula ads convey an expectation of failure with breastfeeding, and lead mothers to believe that formula is a solution to fussiness, spitting up, and other normal infant behaviors. Additionally, participants report that the ads are confusing. Is formula feeding superior, inferior, or the same as breastfeeding? This confusion is increased when formula is distributed by health care practitioners and institutions, suggesting provider endorsement.
Formula ads deserve attention because of this confusion. You can find the full study here.

Chest Hair, Breast Milk ... and Human Disgust?????
|
One of our faithful fans sent us a link to a fascinating article on NPR's web site. The article may be about chest hair, but it certainly makes us all think more about how our culture perceives human milk. Feel free to let us know your thoughts on our facebook page.
