Twelve Years of Milk .....
By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director, MilkWorks
 | | Ann Seacrest | Twelve years ago this month MilkWorks opened its doors for the first time. We were a small group of women helping mothers breastfeed in a very small space. If anyone was taking bets, I am sure the odds were against us making it to the end of the year. But we survived. We have grown and developed and have seen thousands of mothers and fathers walk in with their sweet babies and leave a bit more reassured that breastfeeding would work for them.
Breastfeeding support has changed in the past twelve years. We know much more about breastfeeding now which means we have better ways of helping babies who struggle to breastfeed well. The environment of breastfeeding has also evolved. Who knew we would see legislation to assure moms the right to breastfeed in public? (Thank you Senator Annette Dubas!) Or, the Fair Labor Standard Act amended to protect moms in the work force? Or, insurance coverage of breast pumps and breastfeeding help?
Our job will be complete when moms no longer need us - when breastfeeding is widely accepted by our culture and thoroughly understood by all health care providers. Moms and babies will then be surrounded by the loving and wise support they need wherever they turn.
Thank you for allowing us to welcome our 13th year of being here for families!

A Breastfeeding Journey
|
 | | Jenny and Levi |
Jenny's Story
My son was born by Cesarean after about six hours of labor when we found out he was breech. He was a sleepy baby in the hospital. He would latch and suckle a bit, but for the most part the nurses had me pump and finger feed him. There was not a lactation consultant working during my hospital stay, so the nurses did the best they could. When Levi did latch, often his lip was curled in and it hurt. One of the nurses wondered if he might have a tongue tie. I thought she was making a joke. Babies don't talk, so how could a baby be tongue tied? Read more

Pay it Forward
|
 | | Angie Keim |
Three and a half years ago I walked into MilkWorks ready to throw in the breastfeeding towel with my fifth baby. I had nursed all four of my previous babies, including a set of twins, with zero problems. That day Suzy Meyers, Dr. Leeper and the rest of the MilkWorks staff went from "last resort" to HEROES in my life. Now, I would like the opportunity to "pay it forward." I am currently an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay and, like the staff at MilkWorks, Mary Kay Ash had a dream to change the lives of women for the better. In the month of February, I will be donating 50% of my Mary Kay profits to MilkWorks in an effort to help more mothers receive the support they need. There will also be a drawing for a babyworks gift certificate from all orders received during this campaign. Please contact me for more information or to place an order.
