Boys & Girls Club program helping middle school kids find their way in Osborn
Greetings!
Project STARS.
Twins Jeanae and James Terry, 12 , hang out at Project STARS.
Anyone who was once a middle schooler knows those years can be tough. In the Osborn neighborhood, where kids often face extra challenges, that's especially true. Fortunately, there is a place these kids can call their own: the Project STARS room at the Holden Boys & Girls Club. The program gives 11- to 14-year-olds a special room inside the club complete with tutoring help, fun programming and a caring adult there just for them. Find out more about this Skillman-funded program in our latest Rose for Detroit blog.
25 black men making Detroit stronger
25 black men making Detroit stronger
In the days after President Obama made an announcement about the new federally-backed My Brother's Keeper initiative, which will funnel money to support efforts to improve outcomes for boys and men of color, President & CEO Tonya Allen wanted to lift up men in Detroit already committed to that cause. And so this list was born -- 25 black men making Detroit stronger. There are so many more who could be included on this list -- share your suggestions with us on Twitter using hashtag #KidsMatterHere.

Study finds kids falling behind in Michigan
The Kids Count in Michigan report was released this week with some troubling news: kids of all races in Michigan are not keeping pace with peers across the country in terms of well being and outcomes. The outcome for African Americans in "opportunity score" placed near the bottom nationally. These children ranks only ahead of Mississippi and Wisconsin.
