Celebrating achievement
Next Random Act of Community brings surprise to school where success is the norm
Greetings!

Random Acts of Community -- Detroit Cristo Rey
Random Acts of Community -- Detroit Cristo Rey

At Detroit Cristo Rey in Southwest Detroit, the class of 2014 has achieved 100 percent acceptance into college. It's the third year in a row the school has hit that goal. To celebrate that fantastic achievement, the Skillman Foundation visited the school on Feb. 20 to perform its second in a series of Random Acts of Community, large-scale acts of giving back that are intended to bring people together and celebrating what's working in Detroit. The 55 seniors enjoyed a pizza party, and received iTunes gift cards and words of encouragement from CEO & President Tonya Allen, who said, "I'm so super proud of you, for doing what you're supposed to do." See a video of the event and read more about it in our Rose for Detroit blog. And stay tuned for more Random Acts of Community, coming soon!

Born and raised on the east side of Detroit, the 25-year-old twin Diggs brothers understand poverty. They understand violence. They understand attending struggling schools that often weren't equipped to meet their needs. And they understand how their successes against the odds put them in a position to do great things for kids facing the same hardships they experienced. Read their story in our Rose for Detroit blog.

Editorial in Bridge Magazine

Earlier this month, the Foundation's Vice President Program & Policy Kristen McDonald penned an editorial for Bridge Magazine
Kristen McDonald
Kristen McDonald is the Skillman Foundation's Vice President, Program & Policy
about the hazardous marketing efforts tied to mid-year recruitment in Detroit's education scene. As schools compete to woo students in their doors -- many with their eye on February's lucrative Count Day -- attention to improving quality is diverted and students suffer,McDonald writes.

She called on all parties from parents to educators to legislators to put students first and put regulations in place that would limit how and when schools focus on marketing and push them to focus instead on quality. Read the full editorial here or on our Rose for Detroit Blog.
