A step toward a safer Detroit for kids

New efforts to document blight underway
|
Greetings!
It's a busy, busy time of year. And not just because it's the holidays. It's a busy time in Detroit, where 75 three-person teams have just begun a monumental task -- to build a rich, up-to-date database of blighted properties in the city of Detroit. Numbers have been circulated in the media of how many blighted properties the city has. But the truth is, no one knows for sure. This undertaking began through a Skillman grant for $110,000 to help Data Driven Detroit partner with Loveland Technologies to create the blexting app used to document each property. Now, the federally-backed Detroit Blight Removal Task Force has backed the project in a big way. This should be a game changer for the city of Detroit and for kids who want to live in neighborhoods and walk down streets without the threats that come with vacant, abandoned buildings. Schools stepping up to help battle hunger

Join the social conversation about what those solutions look like all week on Twitter using hashtag #EdMattersHere. The conversation is led by Excellent Schools Detroit and Gleaners, and will culminate with a one-hour Twitter chat on raising whole, healthy kids from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday. Join in at twubs.com/edmattershere.
