We know it's that time of the year -- time to pack bags, clean house, grocery shop, cook, and gather with friends and family. Before the Thanksgiving madness begins, we wanted to wish you a very happy holiday and share some of the things we're thankful for. Topping the list? The awesome display of artistic talent we get to witness each year as we sponsor a float design contest for Detroit youth. This year's winner is 8th- grader Naomi Cook, who drew a vivid food truck that she imagines could bring the bounty of local farms right to her doorstep. She's a three-time honoree in the contest, and you can see many more pictures of Cook, the honorable mention winners and the float on our Facebook page. And don't forget to tune in on Thanksgiving morning -- or head to Woodward Ave. -- to see the beautiful float as it is showcased in the America's Thanksgiving Day Parade! Also watch for Skillman Foundation President Carol Goss, who is serving as an honorary grand marshal.
Giving thanks for a stronger youth development system
Here are two more things to be thankful for -- innovative youth development programs that are making an impact and a new resource center that will help make that kind of impact more common. In our Rose for Detroit blog, we've written about the Youth Development Resource Center, a newly developed organization that will help youth provides build capacity for crunching numbers and figuring out what they mean. We've also written about a new program that's making math fun for kids living in Osborn. It's a great example of something else we're thankful for -- rich collaborations that are forming to serve Detroit youth better.
Don't miss the updates on the Blight Task Force, which is preparing for an unprecedented parcel survey made possible by a collaboration with Data Driven Detroit and Loveland Technologies.
