Highlights from last week's Mackinac Policy Conference

Tonya Allen on DPTV

Education was the primary focus last week at the Detroit Regional Chamber 2013 Mackinac Policy Conference.
In this video from the conference, Skillman Foundation's incoming CEO Tonya Allen discusses with Christy McDonald how early childhood education is as important as K-12.

Moderator Mary Kramer, publisher for Crain's Detroit Business and a Skillman Foundation Trustee, led panelists in the Final Frontier of Education Reform, a session sponsored by the Foundation at last week's conference. Watch the session here.

Last Thursday at the conference, the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation announced it has raised $59.7 million toward its goal for funding the Educational Achievement Authority school system, as well as community college scholarships for Detroit students. Several philanthropies, including The Skillman Foundation and Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, are contributing. Skillman Foundation CEO and President Carol Goss says that supporting innovative practices such as the EAA is good philanthropic practice in this article. Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley takes a closer look at the EAA in this article.
