Education takes center stage at Mackinaw Policy Conference
Education will be a major focus at the Detroit Regional Chamber 2013 Mackinaw Policy Conference as business, government, education and community leaders come to together to identify solutions to Michigan's most pressing educational challenges. Two important panel discussions will take place Thursday.
Early Childhood Education: The Unfinished Agenda (breakfast panel), sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation: An exciting conversation is taking place in Michigan about the value of early childhood education. Support for increased quality preschool programs is growing among everyone from lawmakers and parents to business leaders and educators. The session will share preliminary results from the Office of Great Start's Early Childhood Systems Analysis, part of a comprehensive early childhood recommendation delivered to the Legislature in May 2013. Additionally, national thought leaders will share practices and innovative models that can be adopted in Michigan to make sure all children have a great start. They will explain how other states are leading the way in early childhood education and why -- for the sake of our children, our economy and our future -- Michigan cannot afford to get left behind.
Detroit: The Final Frontier of Education reform (lunch panel), sponsored by The Skillman Foundation: Detroit is the new epicenter for urban education. And that's largely influenced by the city's adoption and openness to innovation, and a coherent education reform plan. Education reform disruptors, as they're sometimes called, John Covington of the Education Achievement Authority and Dan Varner of Excellent Schools Detroit, will join Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder at the Mackinaw Policy Conference on May 30 to discuss how combining online learning, innovative public policy, bold leadership and high-quality classroom teaching is helping to turn Detroit schools from abysmal to elite.
