Joyce Scott at SNAG 2015 Boston Conference
"It's important to me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home -- even it it's subliminal -- that might make a change in them." -Joyce J. Scott
SNAG is lucky to have Joyce Scott as a presenter on May 21st at this year's conference, in conjunction with our conference theme of Social Impact.
Born in Baltimore in 1948, Scott says that she "started as an artist in vitro." Scott received her BFA in art education from Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1970. Then she moved to Mexico to study at the Institute Allende, San Miguel Allende, where she earned an MFA in crafts.
Her work confronts issues of race, gender, class, and sexuality through the use of unconventional and sculptural beading techniques.
Scott is a member of the American Craft Council's illustrious College of Fellows. Her work can be found in many collections and museums, including The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Renwick/Smithsonian Institution, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Museum of Art and Design.
