Fred Fenster Named SNAG Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient for 2015

 

Fred Fenster will be recognized for his accomplishments as a metalsmith artist, his influential role as teacher and educator, and his long association with SNAG as a Founding Member at this year's SNAG conference in Boston.

 

Born in 1934 in the Bronx, New York, Fred Fenster, revered in the metalsmithing community, has focused on gold and silver jewelry and hollowware in silver, copper, and pewter. Fenster attended City College of New York before receiving an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1960. After operating his own shop for a year, he became a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he began a distinguished teaching career lasting for more than 40 years; he retired as a professor emeritus in 2005. He has been recognized by the American Pewter Guild, and he was named the 2011 Master Metalsmith by the Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. He received the American Craft Council's Gold Medal in 2005. His work is included in the Smithsonian Institute at Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC; Milwaukee Art Museum; National Museum Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea; Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Fred lives and works in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.  

 

LAA SNAG's Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor the Society can bestow upon an individual. This prestigious honor is reserved for leaders who have made significant contributions to contemporary metalsmithing throughout their career.

Each day of the conference will be dedicated to one of our three conference themes of Social Impact, Heritage, and Innovation.

Saturday, May 23rd we will explore Innovation -- how makers are pushing the envelope in our field -- by hearing from Helen Carnac, Arthur Ganson, Nervous System, and Nadya Peek. Learn more

Exhibition in Motion

This year's Exhibition in Motion theme is Rapid Jewelry: a Design Competition of Rapid Prototyping. On May 23rd SNAG is pairing up with the Design Museum Boston to bring you this live fashion show event and fundraiser featuring models wearing cutting edge jewelry. Want to attend? Notes From the Field

Conference presenters Maia Leppo, Anne Fiala, and Jessica Tolbert will be leading a presentation during the 2015 conference entitled "Notes From the Field: Creating Impact, Connections, and Open Exchange." They are looking for volunteers to be interviewed via email for this open dialogue.  The focus of the discussion will be on the spaces that unite and divide the field of metalsmithing. SNAG TV is a constant stream of video revealing the practice, inspiration, and work of our members. This exhibition, hosted online via YouTube and promoted via our Facebook page, will feature several categories and a View + Vote period leading up to the 2015 SNAG conference in Boston. SNAG 2015 Raffle Ticket Sales Begin This Week

Raffle ticket sales begin online this week! Watch for another email in the next few days announcing the start of sales and more information.

Tickets will also be available for purchase at the SNAG conference in Boston. Prize drawings to be held at the conference.

The annual Raffle supports SNAG's Educational Endowment Fund. 
SNAG Perks Logo Design Contest

Remember the "Smiths Do It Better" logo from 2014? This year, SNAG is holding an open design contest among all our members for a fun, new logo that will become the featured design for all our 2015 perks! Want to have your design featured on our stickers, temporary tattoos, t-shirts, aprons, and tool holders? Then this contest is for you!  In addition to design credit and publicity, the winner will receive a one year digital SNAG membership. Deadline: April 3, 2015 at 5 pm EST.

SNAG Scholarships Deadline is This Month

New in 2015, SNAG has three juried scholarships for emerging and mid-career artists to use toward a workshop of their choice in North America. These awards will be as follows: one $2000 award, one $1500 award and one $1000 award; each includes a one-year SNAG membership. Emerging and mid-career artists should have not been enrolled in a degree or certificate program in the past 3 years to qualify.

For 2015, SNAG will also award three student scholarships with at least one award given to a student that is currently an undergraduate.
These scholarships are for tuition towards the artists' degree granting program. The scholarships are as follows: one $2000 award, one $1500 award and one $1000 award; each includes a one-year SNAG membership.
