Happy July everyone!

I hope this Monday finds y'all returning to work after a nice long holiday weekend.  I certainly had my fill of food, friends and fireworks.

Please take a moment to look below and see all the fabulous opportunities available to you.

I spent that last few weeks working on a grant and in doing the research I came across four articles that I found really thought provoking, challenging my ideas on contemporary jewelry today.  If you are interested here are the links to each of those articles.  I hope they prove to push your perception as they did mine.

At our membership meeting we were excited to announced a new mission, vision, and values.  I have listed them below.

Mission:

The Society of North American Goldsmiths advances jewelry and metalsmithing by inspiring creativity, encouraging education, and fostering community.

Vision:

SNAG envisions a diverse jewelry and metals community engaging in thoughtful conversation and critical discourse while preserving tradition and embracing innovation.

SNAG Values

Dedicated: We are committed to the advancement of jewelry, metalsmithing, and community.

Informative: We nourish and share knowledge about jewelry and metalsmithing both inside and outside of our organization.

Innovative: We support, encourage and advance ideas that lead to creative approaches, unique solutions, and crossing boundaries.

As we progress through our strategic planning, we will continue to keep you updated to our progress.

I hope that each of you enjoy your summer!

SOFA CHICAGO Announces New SOFA SPACE!

SOFA CHICAGO is pleased to announce the launch of SOFA SPACE, an exciting new area of the fair designed to showcase unrepresented and emerging artists.

This project was conceived in order to give individual artists, who wish to present an installation or body of artwork, a platform at SOFA CHICAGO.
Included artwork is NOT FOR SALE, and participating artists are currently unrepresented and cannot now, or ever have been affiliated with a gallery or SOFA exhibitor. All applications will be reviewed for quality and appropriateness by a jury of curators assembled by SOFA CHICAGO.

The Application for SOFA SPACE is available here.  Applications are due August 15, 2014.

SOFA hopes is that this project will bring together a pool of emerging talent for both our participating galleries and attendees alike!
We will encourage you and fair visitors to discover new voices in art and design, and we are looking forward to adding to the innovative and exciting artwork at SOFA CHICAGO 2014!

On Body and Soul: Contemporary Armor to Amulets by Suzanne Ramljak, published by Schiffer Publishing

From the beginning of time, armor and amulets have been used for protection and are found in cultures across the globe, and those who crafted them have been esteemed as artists by their communities. The contemporary examples showcased here, in 200 eye-catching images, demonstrate the enduring artistry of the forms and the crucial role such objects can play in safeguarding body and soul, especially
in our current Age of Terror. Suzanne Ramljak, a writer, art historian and curator, is editor of Metalsmith magazine and curator at the American Federation of Arts. She has contributed to several publications, and has lectured widely on contemporary art and craft.  For more details or to order click here.

Art Jewelry Forum Best of Interviews Edited by Ben Lignel, published by AJF

The first edition of Art Jewelry Forum Best of Interviews sold out in less than four months--a success due no doubt to the fact that AJF printed a total of 12 not really...), but possibly also because it is a nimble, pocket-sized, and above all, content-rich publication. The book comprises a selection of 20 interviews that provide insights into contemporary jewelry's backstage: teachers, makers, curators, collectors, designers, and dealers discuss how they do it, why they do it, and occasionally, with whom they do it.  Check out more details and order here.

Niche Awards Application Now Open!

Sponsored by NICHE magazine, the NICHE Awards program began in 1989 to celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian fine craft. Artists are recognized in both professional and student divisions. The prestigious NICHE Awards competition recognizes the creative achievement of individual artists and provides a new level of exposure to their work. Works are judged by professionals in the fine craft and gift industry. The competition is open to any craft artist residing in the U.S. or Canada and is especially for artists who are now or plan to be producing work for resale by retail stores and galleries. Each artwork is considered for its technical merit, originality and creative design, and marketability. There is a separate division of the category for student-made artwork. Click here for more info
