Take the Membership Survey!
Deadline: March 31
We want to know what you think SNAG is and what it can be. We want to know what you think SNAG does well and where it falls short. You are our membership and the foundation of SNAG. We would greatly appreciate your feedback. This survey should take between 15 - 25 minutes to complete and asks 103 questions. You can answer only the questions you want and leave the others blank. Please provide as much or as little feedback as you would like.
The results of this survey will be a big part of our new strategic plan. We want to make informed decisions, so please take a few minutes and tell us what you think. Your opinions matter.
Feel free to share this link with others who may be interested in participating!

SNAG'S 2014 UNIQUES SPRING SALE ON EBAY: JUNE 2-16.SNAG is excited to announce the 2nd UNIQUES online

auction benefiting our members and SNAG. Uniques is an online auction of one-of-a-kind, limited edition, unusual, and handmade contemporary art jewelry and small metal items that will help SNAG members gain exposure and sell work while helping the organization raise funds for programming. The first UNIQUES event, launched December 2013, was a hit wit h our audience, generated many sales and happy customers, so we decided to host another sale as a SNAG membership benefit - this time with a twist! Significant Objects, a literary and anthropological experiment devised by Rob Walker and Joshua Glenn, demonstrated that the effect of narrative on any given object's subjective value can be measured objectively. So, if we paired a talented, creative writer who invents a story, poem, or written words about a beautiful, well crafted piece, would the value of the object increase? Invested with new significance by this fiction, the object should - according to Walker's and Glenn's hypothesis - acquire not merely subjective but also objective value. | Grey Radiance Pin Alice Kresse
|
How to test their theory? The UNIQUES Sale on eBay! SNAG is looking to match writers with artists. We are asking writers to come up with UNIQUE insight about the various pieces that will be up for auction, to take the work to the next level by writing poetry, short stories or a few sentences about it, 50 words max., one writer per piece. Professional Development Seminar:
Collector's Collections and You
"An Incurable Jewelry Collector"
When the Professional Development Seminar was looking for a prominent jewelry collector to feature in this year's program, Susan Cummins, the Art Jewelry Forum's Board Chair recommended we speak with Donna Schneier who had just

donated a significant collection of jewelry to the Racine Arts Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. More information about the show at the Metropolitan The big question is, of course, what prompted her to start a jewelry collection in the first place? What kind of work is she interested in? What is her approach to collecting overall? Join us for this year's Professional Development Seminar on Friday, April 25 from 1:30-5 PM and listen to Donna speak about her motivation to collect art jewelry and how she ensured her collection would get noticed. The book Unique by Design: Contemporary Jewelry from the Donna Schneier Collection written by Metalsmith Editor, Suzanne Ramljak, highlights 60 pieces that made their way to the Met which will showcase the collection beginning this May. The pieces in this lively volume were created primarily from the early 1960s to the present day and show a fluid engagement with various traditions in jewelry- making-from old masterworks to contemporary pieces-as well as
various 20th-century art movements such as conceptual art, arte povera, and surrealism. Above all, these are works meant to be worn, to create a dynamic engagement with a body. You can read more and pre-order your copy on Amazon! If you cannot attend the entire conference, but are interested in the Professional Development Seminar , Register for a Day Pass

Nicole Jacquard
Nicole is currently an Associate Professor at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts from IU in 1991 & her first MFA from the University of Michigan. Nicole received her second MFA in 1995 while on a Fulbright Scholarship to Australia at RMIT
University in Melbourne. In 2004 Nicole returned to RMIT and completed her Ph.D. in Fine Arts.

Nicole has presented over 25 lectures on her work & is published in over 35 books, catalogues + websites. Her work can be found in the collection of the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary + the Riga Porcelain Museum in Riga, Latvia.
Q & A
The membership of SNAG is passionate and diverse. How do you view the president's role in energizing this group, growing our membership, and fostering a sense of unity within our organization?
Nicole: Overall I believe the strength of SNAG's membership is the diversity of its members. It was started by just a few passionate people but has grown because of the communities it provides for its members in which to share, grow, develop new ideas, techniques, partnerships and friendships. Its participants are makers with diverse backgrounds who are all encouraged to engage with the larger community through the various outlets that SNAG offers.
Generally I see the president's role is to help identify and facilitate the interests of the various members. In that role the president should listen to the changing tides of what they would like from their organization and help develop new programs where they feel part of the whole and not simply paying their dues. I feel the president has a responsibility to be visible and available to the entire group, she/he would welcome all member ideas, provide a platform for new programs and help the board identify where new life is needed for existing events.
I want members to have ownership of this organization and to actively help SNAG become a stronger organization. I think creating that comes from engaging members and building meaningful relationships from within. I also believe that members have a responsibility to take ownership of their organization and be heard so we can all work toward the goals of the organization together.
Tedd McDonah
Tedd currently lives in Millersville, PA where he works in and maintains his blacksmithing and non-ferrous metalsmithing studios. He is a part time studio artist, part time educator, part time tool-maker/repairman, and in the summer time, avid fisherman. His metalsmithing training came from the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse and Arizona State University where he earned the degrees BS in Art, and an MFA, respectively. This semester he continues to teach at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, and for the first time at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.
Q & A
The membership of SNAG is passionate and diverse. How do you view the president's role in energizing this group, growing our membership, and fostering a sense of unity within our organization?
Tedd: Open-mindedness is a key factor when serving any diverse group. SNAG is certainly no different. I understand the members' expectations of SNAG are currently (and will likely continue to be) as diverse as the group itself. That fact alone sets well with me knowing there are rich learning/sharing opportunities in a broad educational sense. The future and vitality of SNAG is, and will be directly impacted by the membership - it will be important for me to discover new ways of promoting SNAG to universities, high schools, art centers, galleries, museums, privately owned studios, etc. If elected, I intend to pursue an informative initiative for those who may already have a vague idea, but are not completely aware of who, and what SNAG is. I am strongly attracted to the idea of educational, critical, and thought provoking discourse within the organization; through which, an energy and sense of fostering can come.
