Professional Development Seminar: Collector's Collections and You
Have you ever watched Antiques Roadshow? People bring in personal items to have them authenticated and authenticated. Examples of jewelry or metalwork are placed in front of the experts and what do they look for? A maker's mark - and a great story to go with the piece. The experts call that story 'the provenance'. Provenance is the history of the work, where and when it was purchased, who owned it and what paper trail can be provided to back it all up. Our first two speakers of the upcoming Professional Development Seminar will be Andy Cooperman and Harriete Estel Berman, who will address the importance of the maker mark and inventory records in documenting the value of YOUR work now and in the future. If you cannot attend the entire conference, but are interested in the Professional Development Seminar, Register for a Day Pass

She is currently an Assistant Professor of Art Metal at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. After five years at SFASU, Lauren has received honors including the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Fine Arts & was named the Bright Ideas Spotlight Exhibitor for outstanding research representing the College of Fine Arts. Her artwork has been published in Lark Books 500 Metal Vessels & 500 Wedding Rings. Exhibition highlights include a solo show at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft & honorable mention in the juried exhibition Craft Forms. Last November, her outdoor sculptures were in a solo exhibition at the Greater Denton Arts Council in Texas & are currently on display in public parks. Selden was recently selected to take part in a SFASU-sponsored research project in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil) in the summer of 2014.Q & A
1. What are your interests in running for the Board and what are you hoping to gain from your
experience as a SNAG Board member?
SNAG has been a component of my life as a student, educator, and professional for the past 13 years. I remain baffled that at a SNAG conference, I can sit down with my metals heroes and have a discussion about the continuation of creating beautiful objects that will continue to be a part of our cultures throughout time. Serving as a SNAG board member would be a gratifying method of service to a community that has provided me with knowledge, opportunity, and a constant belief in the importance of what we all do. I hope to learn more about fundraising and administration of a non-profit organization while also learning about logistics and management strategies. Meeting new people and working with other talented members would be a perk of the position while engaging in common goals to provide service to this community that has already done so much for so many artists.
2. What expertise, experience, and strengths will you bring and how will these qualities benefit
the organization? For the past six years, I have been the head of the Art Metals program at Stephen F. Austin State University. I have been lucky enough to be in charge of all the inner workings of a studio including: fiscal responsibility for the studio budget, generating a functioning inventory/store for consumable goods, maintenance of tools, equipment, and facilities, teaching a 3-3 load at undergraduate and graduate level, student advising, assessment, service at the school, college and university level, mentoring for graduate teaching assistants, inter-departmental collaborative projects, organizing service learning projects, advertising and recruitment, orchestrating multiple gallery exhibitions and preserving a continual research schedule. Facilitating a project between metals students and the regional archaeological community, connecting two universities for a collaborative art project, and organizing the national juried metals exhibition Refined, are just a few examples of the work that I do. I am passionate about joining skillsets between different fields of study and advocating the work of the artists in our field. With a history of administrative duties at the university level, I honestly feel like it is about time that I serve SNAG. 3. What projects, activities, and/or services do you think are important to the organization? The annual SNAG conference is always an important component of SNAG. I especially appreciate the Lifetime Achievement Award and the commitment to keeping our craft family tree strong and contemporary. I would love to see sub-conferences hosted at locations- perhaps universities- that could be more affordable for students and emerging makers to attend and get their foot in the door. Finally, Metalsmith magazine and Tech Talk are important additions to our experiences as makers and I would want to continue the support of these publications. I would also like to see an even more prolific database of technical articles and photographs of work be established for continued education and growth of the field. 2014 Candidates |

Making Jewelry Magic with the Orion Pulse Arc Welders

September 6 - 7, 2014
The Southern Highland Craft Guild and Folk Art Center are hosting the second National Orion Pulse Arc Welder Workshop in conjunction with SNAG. Attendees will learn what different welder models can do without the high cost of purchasing or maintaining a laser.
Learn to repair porosity, re-tip prongs, weld dissimilar metals together, weld bezels together, resize rings, construct jewelry without soldering, and even weld titanium. Brett White from Orion Jewelry Welders, as well as David Alberts, and Ruthie Cohen of the Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary will be working with each individual on an actual pulse arc welder. Jewelers are encouraged to bring projects that they are working on to the workshop!
Workshop fees are being donated to SNAG and the Southern Highland Craft Guild for their educational programs. A $50 deposit is all that is necessary to hold your space.
For more information please contact Ruthie Cohen by phone: 828-687-7830 or by email
