Happy winter everyone!
Most of us are in the thick of the cold, snow and ice that winter brings, but the bright light in all this gray is that our conference is coming up! From Grains to Gold is going to be such an exciting gathering - our line up is amazing and Minneapolis sounds like a terrific city. Check out some of these facts!
Did you know? Our keynote speaker, Dr. Tayna Harrod, is one of the brilliant editors of The Journal of Modern Craft. This publication is the first peer-reviewed academic journal to provide an interdisciplinary international forum in its subject area. It addresses all forms of making that self-consciously set themselves apart from mass production, whether in the making of designed objects, artworks, buildings, or other artifacts. The journal covers all aspects of craft as it exists within the condition of modernity (as it has been conceived roughly from the mid-19th century to the present day) without geographical or disciplinary boundary. The Journal of Modern Craft was launched in March 2008 and is published by Bloomsbury three times a year. It is edited by Glenn Adamson (Museum of Art and Design New York), Tanya Harrod (Independent Scholar, London) and Edward S. Cooke Jr. (Yale University). The website serves as a portal to the print journal, but also complements its objectives with blog posts, author interviews, reviews, links to other websites and forum discussions. Find out more here
Did you know? The conference starts early this year. PLEASE note that we start our programming on Wednesday April 23 at 6:30 pm. Be sure to arrive in time to check out the thought-provoking panel including Sharon Church, Rachel Timmins, and April Wood. In Fresh, Marinated and Seasoned: Three Stages in a Life of Teaching, Learning and Making, the artists will describe their experiences, concerns and hopes for the future of studio jewelry and metalsmithing from their positions at distinctly different points in their careers. A discussion will follow, focusing on how different stages of experience feed into one other, fueling community, education and innovation within the field. Don't miss this!
Did you know? The Trunk Show is filling fast, so register for the conference today to secure your place. We will be advertising the sale on local radio and in print,so traffic should be good. This year, we have a special VIP shopping hour before the sale is open to the public to assure that serious customers have time to shop comfortably and talk to you about your work. Sign up here!
Stay warm and safe - hope to see you in April.
In SNAG,
Gwynne

Volunteer Spotlight: Sam Mitchell Sam Mitchell is a graduate student at the University of Iowa, and will be graduating in May SNAG has helped SNAG by calling volunteers. She has also been conducting gallery interviews to help emerging artists with the daunting task of approaching galleries for potential representation. (Galleries, if you're reading this and are interested in free promotion and getting information out about your gallery to a well informed community please feel free to contact Sam at aldentedesigns@yahoo.com. She promises it will be quick and painless and will help new talent in the field!) Sam says she volunteers for SNAG "because I don't feel that being a part of an organization is much good unless I try to be involved. It's a mutually beneficial setup, my name gets out there and I take pride and ownership in an organization that I really want to be successful." We asked Sam who she would choose as a mentor... "I've already had an amazing group of mentors and I couldn't be more thankful for them; but if I had the opportunity work with anyone, it would have to be sculptor Lee Bontecou. Her work never ceases to amaze me." Thanks, Sam!
