Hi all!
I hope this Monday finds you all happy and full from a long holiday weekend of friends, family, and food. As we launch into our holiday shopping season, I would like to ask each of you to think about buying handmade gifts for your loved ones this season.
I have received many, many gifts over the years, but the ones I remember best are those that were handmade. My all-time favorites include the Christmas dress my mom made me at age 6, really cool diptych prints that my brother and sister-in-law gave me and the wooden ring box my husband made me with a tulip (my favorite flower) on top to hold my engagement ring.

As a group of makers and aficionados, it is important we help spread the word on the value of buying handmade objects. For every $1 we invest in an artist, $3 gets reinvested in the local economy. There is a huge economic impact when purchasing handmade items from local artists. We can help elevate the profile of craft artists, helping them grow their market through the simple gesture of committing to buying only handmade objects for our holiday season. Please join me and buy handmade only for the holidays. Happy shopping!

Connections: Conference News You Need to Know
George Sawyer: From Tattoos to Bamboos One of the most important (and sometimes most elusive) components of creating an object is the original inspiration that kicks off the chain reaction of creativity. I would like to offer a series of inspirations that have driven my work forward and to show how one of these inspirations developed into a completed object.Read George's biography here!

Now that we've given thanks for the things we have, let's start sharing those wish lists of the things we'd like to have.
SNAG needs a few good people to step forward as Presidential Candidates.
The Nominations & Elections Committee elves are working hard to build an outstanding slate of candidates for the 2014 election but we still need to find our future leader.Should you know or, in fact, be the person* who has the skills, experience, and devotion to take the reins, we'd be happy to receive your email (and appease you with all the milk & cookies you can handle!!!) *Scrooges & Grinches need not reply.
If you would like to speak to someone who has direct knowledge of SNAG initiatives, address those questions to the Chair.

This Week on the SNAG News Blog
Books & DVDs -- A list of beautiful and informative books, including Creative Metal Forming by Betty Helen Longhi and Cynthia Eid. These two metalsmiths have joined forces to provide a comprehensive survey of the ways to form sheet metal. The 256-page text covers a huge swath, from a basic dapped disk through synclasting, anticlasting and spiculums to a raised vessel. Special attention is given to anticlastic forming and the vocabulary first introduced by their mentor, Heikki Seppä.

Volunteer Spotlight: Sue Dierks
Sue Dierks lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is a jeweler that hand fabricates my pieces from sterling silver and gemstones. We asked Sue why she volunteers and who she would choose as a mentor. "I would like to become more involved with SNAG and to meet fellow jewelers. If I could choose a mentor now, I would choose Tim McCreight."
Thanks, Sue!
