Happy Monday y'all,
CERF+ (Craft Emergency Relief Fund + Artists' Emergency Resources) offers direct financial and educational assistance to craft artists, including emergency relief assistance, business development support, resources and referrals on topics such as: health, safety, and insurance. At SOFA Chicago, CERF+ released their findings of their recent national artist research study. The 54-page study, "Sustaining Careers: A Study of the Status of U.S. Craft Artists," is available to read online or download free from the CERF+ website.
The following is from CERF+:
"Sustaining Careers" examines craft artists' attitudes about trends affecting the field, sales and income, insurance, emergency preparedness and recovery, and legacy planning. It also provides updates and comparison data with CERF+'s 2004 National Research Study. Some compelling insights they learned are:
Work & Income
- 72% of full-time craft artists net less than $25,000 per year from their art-related income with 45% of them netting under $10,000 per year.
- Only about 1/4 of full-time craft artists provide over 80% of their family income.
Survey respondents reported income in ranges, providing a very different picture than looking at mean and median incomes. The results are sobering, but we also understand from the research that craft artists do not rely solely on their craft businesses to support their families. Business Preparedness & Insurance- 60% of craft artists remain uninsured for business-related losses.
- CERF+ has seen an almost 9% improvement in those who are properly insured for business losses since our 2007 insurance survey.
- The misconception that homeowners insurance provides coverage for art-related losses is still commonly held.
Emergency Preparedness & Career Vulnerability- Craft artists familiar with CERF+ programs, or who have received CERF+ information or communications, or who have a copy of CERF+'s Studio Protector, are about 10% more likely to have taken safety and preparedness precautions than those who had not heard of CERF+.
- Over a quarter (27%) of respondents had suffered an injury or illness that has significantly reduced their capacity to work.
- Nearly half of all responding craft artists (47%) do not have sufficient cash reserves (cash and accounts receivable) to meet their household expenses for one month.
American craft artists are under-prepared to meet an emergency, whether it's personal, weather-related, or financial. While 96% of all artists have some college education, many describe being hindered by a lack of business training. CERF+ plans to use information learned from this research to help safeguard and strengthen the careers of craft artists throughout the nation. CERF+'s staff and board believe this will also serve to enlighten the craft field and arts sector as a whole about the needs, challenges, and opportunities artists face as they work to sustain their careers. Thank you CERF+ for bringing these issues to light. This study will help inform SNAG's Board and staff as we continue our strategic planning. Please take a moment to download the executive summary of the study and pass along to others. In SNAG, Gwynne
PS. I forgot to thank a volunteer who helped out at SOFA, Pat Stephens, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and sorry we inadvertently left you off last week's list! |

Connections: Conference News You Need to Know
Mirjam Hiller will be speaking about her work in Minneapolis! She will talk about the intersection of ideas and shapes and her approach to bringing life to flat sheets of metal. By laboriously sawing it for thousands of millimeters and bending it to an unexpected three dimensional object, it evokes naturally occurring shapes. In her vision, time and devotion invested in a piece are essential for the intensity captured within. Visit Mirjam's website here!

Volunteer Spotlight: Jessica Shaykett
Jessica Shaykett lives in Minneapolis, MN. She is the librarian at American Craft Council in Minneapolis where she spends her days helping artists, scholars, educators, students and curators find information about contemporary craft artists and history. Jessica is a member of the 2014 conference logistics committee. We asked her why she is volunteering: "Since joining the ACC staff, I've gotten to know folks involved in SNAG, including Emily, Britta and Dominique - the Minneapolis conference co-chairs. I admire the innovative work coming out of the jewelry field and have enjoyed learning more about artists working in metals and jewelry. Volunteering is just my way to give back to an organization connected to the work we do at the ACC. Also, I've enjoyed getting to know the other members of the Logistics Committee and gaining experience in the conference planning process." We also asked Jessica who she would pick as her mentor: "While she passed away in the 1960s, I would have loved to study or work with Margaret De Patta. I have great respect for her work, intelligence and influence as a liberated female artist - she was definitely ahead of her time."
Thanks Jessica!
