Gwynne Rukenbrod
Executive Director
|
Hi everyone!
I am very excited to have the honor of being your next Executive Director. I have been a member and admirer of SNAG for many years and I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. Over the last few weeks I've been having conversations with the board, SNAG members, and friends and I have heard the word tribe used to describe the SNAG community. I love that word. SNAG is a tribe!
Over the next 15 months, the board and I will be working with you, the membership, to examine our current strategic plan and see if we are on the right track or if some adjustments need to be made. The board has made some great strides (which have previously been outlined to you) to make SNAG a sustainable organization. Our goal is to create an effective organization that thrives for another 44 years. In next 15 months, we will be giving you the opportunity to share your vision for SNAG. Please help to define our tribe!
There are also some upcoming opportunities I don't want you to miss:
- Check out our extended registration deadline for the Forging Entrepreneurs' Symposium.
- If your membership has lapsed or will lapse soon, don't forget to renew!
- Please consider giving to our end of year annual campaign. We are so fortunate to have the support of the Windgate Charitable Foundation and they will be matching every dollar donated with a dollar up to $25,000! This is a great opportunity to double your donation.
- Look for new member benefits to help you grow and maintain your practice.
This means it is more important than ever that you continue to open Riveting News, as this is our main form of communication and there will be a lot of developments and opportunities that you won't want to miss!
I'd like to thank you all for the warm wishes and kind greetings I have already received. I am looking forward to working with each of you and advancing the field!
In SNAG,

Gwynne

So many artists dream of being able to derive an income from their passion. This seems to be the single biggest challenge for artists who don't want to spend the rest of their creative lives waiting tables! The recent addition of a business focused conference by SNAG is so exciting - finally some inspiration and guidance for those who want to make a living from their art!
I have always loved both sides - art and business. After 13 years of selling art jewelry in a commercial setting I have learned that all my efforts must be focused on fulfilling one lofty goal: to build my brand. This is achieved not just through marketing and advertising, but through great customer service, unique jewelry designs, dependable quality and delivery, and a policy of integrity and graciousness.
Every day brings countless decisions that, depending on my companies' response, can either build or degrade my brand. I look forward to sharing, in a time line format, some of the most important challenges I have faced and and what decisions I made to get me to where I am today. |
Register now through EventBrite
Registration closes October 4, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. PST.

Connections: Conference News You Need to Know
SNAG's 43rd annual conference, 'From Grains to Gold' will be held in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Separated by the Mississippi River, Minneapolis and St. Paul (nicknamed the Twin Cities) are the entertainment and cultural center of the upper Midwest.
Minneapolis has a thriving dynamic city center with distinctive glass and steel buildings designed by the likes of Philip Johnson, Jean Nouvel and Frank Gehry .
The city also boasts the world-famous Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Walker Art Center, and the Guthrie Theater, the birthplace of the American regional professional theater movement.
Along the Mississippi riverfront in Minneapolis are historic mills, the 1883 Stone Arch Bridge, and scenic walkways.
Downtown St. Paul is home to the Minnesota Children's Museum, The Science Museum of Minnesota, and The Landmark Center which celebrates the arts, history and community. Every spring, St. Paul is home to The American Craft Council St. Paul Craft Show.
Each of the twin cities are rich with arts-based organizations and institutions including the Northern Clay Center, the Textile Center, the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center, the Casket Arts Building, and the Northrup King Building, among many others including many that will be featured as part of our Exhibition Night and Studio Crawl!

Deadline: January 19th, 2014 Juror: Susie Ganch Exhibition Organizers: Sarah Holden and Kat Cole
One would expect Jewelry artists to be limited to objects of personal adornment, but many contemporary makers in this field have gone beyond the constraints of functionality to pursue conceptual interests in areas such as photography, kinetics and sculpture.
This exhibition seeks makers whose work demands exploration both on and off of the body. What happens when a metalsmith goes beyond the boundaries of the wearable? How does the work change when function and jewelry mechanics no longer need to be considered? Can the conversation continue seamlessly from a necklace into an installation or sculpture?
We will be accepting submissions from artists who make jewelry or wearable objects in addition to another media or format. The exhibition will feature two works by each artist selected: one piece of jewelry or wearable object and one piece that shifts in scale, medium or material in order to further investigate their ideas.
This exhibition will be presented at SooLOCAL: A Division of Soo Visual Arts Center to run in conjunction with the 2014 SNAG conference in Minneapolis, MN. Minneapolis artists are highly encouraged to apply.
Entry Fee: $25 Call for Entry Info can be found here Submission Form can be found here

Volunteer Spotlight Terry Chamberlin
Terrwyn (Terry) Chamberlin lives in Minneapolis, MN. She is a Gold/Silversmith, MA in Metalsmithing from University of Iowa 1976. She teaches high school jewelry, ceramics and graphic design. Terry is on the Logistics committee for the 2014 Convention, Grains to Gold. Terry has said she helps SNAG in an effort to help promote metal working any way she can.
We asked Terry who she would choose as her mentor? She said "Chunghi Choo was my graduate school professor. She was a wonderful mentor. She brought in guest artists for workshops such as Albert Paley, Mary Lee Hu, Brent Kington, Heikki Seppa, Gene and Hiroko Pijanowski, and others. I was very fortunate."
Thanks, Terry!
