Dear members, As you know, we have been investigating ways to streamline SNAG's programming and make changes that will bring better benefits for you as well as financial stability for the organization. After a thorough cost-benefit analysis, the Board of Directors has decided to go to a bi-annual conference structure starting right after the Boston conference in 2015. In addition, we will begin hosting conferences solely in first-tier cities. Our data has shown that these cities reliably attract a considerably higher number of attendees. Many of our members only attend conferences every other year as it is and we are hoping that we will see a marked increase in conference attendance with the new format as well as more excitement and anticipation around our conferences. SNAG is a large organization and our conferences regularly draw a minimum of 700 attendees (and many more when we gather in first-tier cities.) The cost of hosting events at our scale has increased considerably over the years due to rising hotel costs associated with accommodating a group of our size and the many spaces we require for our programming. In addition, our small staff and many volunteers dedicate innumerable hours toward conference planning and this has become unsustainable. The new bi-annual structure will allow SNAG staff and volunteers to spend more time to work on each conference, its programing and logistics, which will create better experiences for you. We have also heard your concerns about the cost of attending SNAG conferences in general. While the cost of hotels that can accommodate us are the same regardless of location, it is more affordable and convenient to fly into first-tier cities. Also, the bi-annual structure gives you twice as much time to plan ahead for the cost of attending. We value what you've been telling us and are committed to providing you with the best possible conference experience while keeping costs as low as possible. As you may know, we also organize an annual symposium. These are smaller-scale, business oriented events offering practical information for the small-business owner. We invite you to consider attending the symposiums, especially on off-conference years. They are more intimate events with great opportunities to meet people and have your questions about business answered directly. In our continual quest for financially stability, we have been looking at every expense and have a great success story to share: The production of Metalsmith has always come at a significant cost. After researching different companies and their options, we have settled on a combination of changes in the production, printing and mailing of Metalsmith magazine that will save SNAG $20,000 a year! There will be no discernible changes to the magazine itself, it will just be produced at a much lower rate, alleviating a significant amount of overhead for SNAG and making more of your membership dollars go towards the programming you value. We hope you will be as excited as we are about the concentrating of our efforts into a more sustainable structure. We are looking forward to a new era that serves you and our organization better! With best regards, Renee Zettle-Sterling President |

Connections: Conference News You Need to Know
SNAG is pleased to introduce the brains behind the operations of our upcoming 2014 conference 'From Grains to Gold' taking place in Minneapolis, April 23-26 - a mere 7 months away!
Our three co-chairs, Emily Johnson, Britta Kauppila, and Dominique Bereiter have been hard at work shaping what is turning out to be a fantastic event for everyone. When asked to reflect at this stage of the conference planning about what they were most excited about or looking forward to, this is what our intrepid leaders had to say:
Emily:
"I am most excited about being able to show off what Minneapolis has to offer.
We have really amazing jewelers, designers, and artists that many people don't know. I think Minneapolis is unique in that we have a centralized area with studios - old warehouses converted into artists' studios and a central arts district that's not just for museums and galleries but also offers dedicated work spaces for artists. I'm thrilled to be able to show off the vibrant Minneapolis arts community."
Britta:
"I'm so excited to see a concept that was formed 3 years ago turn into concrete programming with speakers and makers invited from around the nation and globe that will be right in our Midwest backyard. We have created a program that will foster a smaller conference experience with these influential speakers and makers right at our fingertips along with many social and networking events to create memorable and lasting relationships with fellow SNAG members."
Dominique:
"Finally I can see the conference coming together. I can't wait to meet all the invited speakers; it has been a privilege to ask them to participate in our conference. They come from Europe, the US & Canada young & experienced, with different background and ideas. Yes, it will be a fantastic SNAG conference with many new and innovative activities."

The call for entries deadline to enter the 2014 Rio Grande Saul Bell Design Award Competition is fast approaching. The competition, now in its 14th year, recognizes innovation and distinction in jewelry design. It encourages designers to push the limits of their imaginations as they create an original piece of jewelry art in any of seven categories.
A new alternative metals/materials category has been added to the 2014 competition in recognition of the work jewelers are doing with non-precious metals and materials. Designers in this category may use any non-traditional metal or material not covered in another category, including base metals, reactive metals, resin, glass, wood, found objects and textiles.
Deadline: September 27 |

Board Member Todd Pownell Speaks
What brought you to this board position? I was asked to participate on the SNAG board by Sue Amendolara just before the 2013 Conference to fill a gap left by outgoing Eliana Arenas. I have always admired SNAG for its unique mix of critical thought and useful knowledge sharing. I truly felt It would be both challenging and rewarding for me to work with this important organization. What are your plans for board participation (your committee assignment)? I am the Liaison to the Forging Entrepreneurs Symposium. The symposium is an intimate one-day event of practical knowledge located in an area with a strong metals community or guild. I believe the symposium serves as an excellent connector for SNAG to the real place communities of makers, artists and craftsmen to help position their own autonomy in the world. What exciting, interesting, confounding things are you doing right now in your life (other than being on the board)? The exciting new addition to our studio is the actual bench of the late Goldsmith John Paul Miller. We have restored and outfitted it with two microscopes for pave' and bead setting. I like to think of the historical granulation work when we are doing the small stone setting. Currently, my favorite activity outside of the studio is my participation in the sport of orienteering. The objective is finding designated points in the forest using navigational skills involving both map and compass reading. Not only is it great exercise but it also involves a different way of thinking about spatial relationships.
