Week of June 10, 2013
Greetings!
Please disregard the Riveting News that was send out earlier today. Here is the correct version of this week's News.
Today's news blog feature is another guest column from Ethical Metalsmiths, this time written by Marc Choyt, explaining why they believe the Kimberley Certification process for "conflict-free diamonds" should be abandoned. This is Part 1 of a two-part series. We want to welcome our newest Corporate Member, K.M. Paulson Goldsmith Ltd. Based in in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, they design and manufacture custom jewelry. We had to say goodbye to Program Manager Ellen Laing. After being with SNAG for 2.5 years, she decided to return to working at the University of Oregon. She did a great job and it's been a real pleasure working with her. Stepping into the Program Manager position through the end of the Minneapolis conference is Monica Hampton, formerly the Director of Education at the American Craft Council and the person who coordinated the ACC conference in Minneapolis several years ago. So not only does she know conferences, she also knows Minneapolis and has a great relationship with ACC.

Paul C. Balan Creates National Humanities Medal Design
The centerpiece of this design for the National Endowment for the Humanities is Lady Liberty, symbolic of freedom and our long held values of generosity and compassion. The diadem worn by Lady Liberty contains 13 spikes representative of the original 13 colonies.
In her right arm she is depicted cradling a sheaf of wheat which symbolizes prosperity to be shared with all of mankind. The quill that she holds in her right hand symbolizes knowledge which is chronicled in the open journal displayed on her lap. To her right is a dove which is the messenger of peace; the strand of wheat in its beak a symbol of gratitude. In her left hand, Lady Liberty is depicted clutching a lamp that represents the light of wisdom.
Balan has created a medal both classic and contemporary.

The CoD+A Awards: Collaboration of Design + Art This call for entries was successfully closed on May 31 with over 400 entries from around the globe. This is the first international awards program to honor the collaborations between designers, architects, artists, and art professionals--individuals whose collective imaginations create engaging public and private spaces.
The submissions, representing twenty-nine countries in eight design categories, demonstrate an increasing desire on the part of design professionals to involve artists early in the design process and to collaborate with them for outstanding results.
All CoD+A Awards winners will be announced in the fall. The entries are on view at codaawards.com. |

This Week on Jay Whaley's MetalSmith BenchTalk
Sculptural and contemporary with references to natural forms, Sydney Lynch's jewelry embodies an organic geometry in which shapes are juxtaposed to achieve a sense of balance and proportion. Comfort and wearability are primary concerns. As a highly visual person, Lynch finds inspiration everywhere: in natural forms, landscapes, weathered cityscapes, art museums.
