Week of April 29, 2013
Greetings!
Today's news blog features are Member Achievements and the Guest Column "Jewelry Photography Secret Weapons" by John Rose. Don't overlook the value of reading Member Achievements. In addition to publicizing all the great accomplishments of our members, reading through these is good research to learn about opportunities that you might not have otherwise known. In someone else's success are gems that could advance your career next. Online voting in this year's election opens in two days, on May 1. There are open seats on the board of directors and the Nominations & Elections Committee, plus several ballot measures for revisions to the Constitution and Bylaws. We have three easy ways for you to vote: online voting, voting onsite at the conference, and mail in ballots. If you prefer to mail in a ballot, contact Tara Jecklin and she'll get that to you asap. All mail in ballots must be postmarked no later than May 7. Voting is important. If you want a voice in the discussions and decisions made by the board, then exercise your right to vote. I strongly urge every member, including all student members, to take time to read what the candidates say and then VOTE. LAST CALL: Advance conference registration ends May 1 at midnight. After May 1, all registrations will be handled onsite at the conference hotel. We always welcome walk up registrations. No one will be turned away. I need to clarify something I reported earlier concerning SNAG's juried student exhibition this year, "Confluence." I'd reported that there were 519 submissions, and some people complained that the jurors had selected the work of only 23 students from a pool of 519 students. It turns out that I read the information incorrectly. The jurors received submissions from 203 students, a total of 519 images, and selected 23 pieces for the exhibition in Toronto. So the jurors selected the work of 23 students from a pool of 203 students. It's definitely competitive, just not as extreme as I'd thought.

Only ticket holders to the EIM will be entered into the drawing for the FREE diamond.
There are still some tickets left: $30 for the floor or $100 for the Diamond level which includes complimentary wine, hors d'oeuvres, and time to talk informally with the conference speakers. Purchase your ticket now before they're all gone. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they will not be sold onsite in Toronto.

2013 SNAG Election - Nominations & Elections Committee
Each week we are profiling a different candidate for the 2013 SNAG election.
Jeff McGee began his academic career at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, earning an Associate's Degree in 2001 in Animation. He continued his studies at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where he received his BFA, cum laude in Metalsmithing in 2006 which led to his Honors MFA work at The University of Kansas' historic Metals program.0
In January 2011, McGee accepted a full-time position as 3-D art faculty at San Jacinto College in Houston, TX. He currently sits on the board of the Houston Metal Arts Guild, and has been an active SNAG member since 2007.
McGee's work has been shown nationally and internationally, with high regard for its craftsmanship and whimsical approach to traditional mediums and practices. Recently, his work was purchased by the Kamm Teapot Foundation, and included in the CU:29 exhibit during the Phoenix SNAG conference. McGee's passion for inter-disciplinary dialogue is evident in his teaching methods and creative pursuits which stress contemporary problem solving and critical thinking across diverse vocations.
