Executive Director
Week of March 25, 2013

Greetings!

The news blog today contains a sneak preview of some of the eye candy you'll see in the Trunk Show in Toronto.  Given the site of the conference (Canada) and customs issues, this year's Trunk Show exhibitors will be two-thirds Canadian.

Today's news blog also delivers
the first of a three-part guest "column" from Ethical Metalsmiths.  We are partnering with EM to encourage dialog about the ethical implications of jewelry.  Essays by EM members will be engaging, challenging and hopeful. The topics will range from visionary to practical. Writers for this series are professional jewelers, professors, theorists and in general, aficionados of jewelry.

I will be on vacation for the next three Riveting News, back in the office on April 15.  You will still receive Riveting News each Monday but they will be a lot shorter while I'm away.  The normal issues will resume as of April 22.  My vacation time does not impact the weekly news blog posts.

Arts/Industry Residency Program

John Michael Kohler's Arts/Industry program is one of the most unusual ongoing collaboration between art and industry in the United States.

Participants are exposed to a body of technical knowledge that enables them to explore forms and concepts not possible in their own studios as well as new ways of thinking and working.

Artists-in-residence may work in the Kohler Co. Pottery, Iron and Brass Foundries, and Enamel Shop to develop a wide variety of work in clay, enameled cast iron, and brass including but not limited to murals and reliefs, temporary or permanent site-specific installations, and functional and sculptural forms.

Artists working in any discipline may apply. Find more information on the JMK websiteDeadline:  April 1 for 2014 residencies.

Tenure Track Position in International Art Education
This position at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, Finland, can be filled on the levels of Associate Professor or Full Professor.

International Art Education is focused on visual culture education that includes media education, art teaching, design education and various skills of mediating cultural heritage. The cooperation between university units of art education grants a rich approach to the discipline: the combination of art and education opens up into questions that are fundamental in cross-cultural understanding. The primary research area is art education in all levels of institutional education and the international exchange of art education studies.

Find more information about the position and how to apply at the Aalto University websiteDeadline:  April 11
100,000 SlideShare Views of PDS
23 programs of craft business information
and more than 100,000 views.

Kudos to Harriete Estel Berman, Andy Cooperman and Brigitte Martin, the Professional Development Seminar coordinators.  For the past three years Harriete has created SlideShares for every presentation at our annual Seminar, and those live on SNAG's website.

Call to action:  Share these presentations with others--in your local arts organization newsletter , guild newsletter or Facebook page.  AND outside of the SNAG community....most of this information is not specific to metals and would help all artists.

While 100,000 is a great goal to attain....it is peanuts on the web.  Seriously, if a silly pet video can reach a million views, there is no reason why each Seminar presentation shouldn't be 100,000 views.

Go to the SNAG website and check them out, we have a good library
of topics to choose from.  Don't miss this year's Professional Development Seminar, "Sacred Cow, Purple Cow, Cash Cow."  I'll let you know when the SlideShare for this year's Seminar is up, after the conference.
