Executive Director
Week of March 11, 2013

Greetings!

The first of today's weekly news blog posts is In Memorium to master goldsmith and 2005 SNAG Lifetime Achievement Award John Paul Miller, who died last weekend.  A memorial service was held yesterday at the Cleveland Institute of Art.  My gratitude to Eleanor Moty for sending me links to two videos: The first one was produced by Jeff Mancinetti of John Paul discussing his work and his career.  The other is a Cleveland Arts prize video about John Paul.

Second in today's news blog posts is the slate of the candidates who are running in SNAG's 2013 election, for two seats on the board of directors and one seat on the Nominations & Elections Committee.  Jim Bove, Becky McDonah, and Rachel Timmins are running for the board of directors.  Candidates for the NEC are Jeff McGee, Gina Westergard, and Laura Wood. I hope you'll spend time reading the board candidates' responses to five questions that were posed to them.

Last I would like to encourage SNAG student members to check out the Judy Cheteyan Scholarship Fund and consider a three-month internship at SNAG or another organization this summer. The Scholarship provides a college or graduate student with a paid three-month summer internship to gain professional experience within an internationally known contemporary craft organization. This provides the student with professional and career development and practical experience working with professional artists and arts management personnel.  Generously sponsored by Judy and Michael Cheteyan.  Deadline is March 15.

Making it Real--International Exhibition of
Digitally Fabricated Objects

Making It Real is a juried exhibition of digitally fabricated objects organized by Ontario College of Art & Design faculty members Jesse Jackson and Greg Sims. The exhibition takes place May 14-28 as part of the Toronto International Jewellery Festival and coincides with the SNAG conference.

Virtual objects will be submitted electronically from around the world and "made real" locally using a variety of 3-D printing technologies. Making It Real will showcase innovative designs for jewelry, products, fine art, and other small objects that take maximum advantage of direct digital manufacturing.  Students, professionals, and creative individuals working in all areas of small-scale digital design and fabrication are encouraged to participate. This is a terrific way to address the border issues for an exhibition.

Go to the Making it Real website for full details of the exhibition the call for entries, and application procedure. They will be announcing the jurors soon. Key deadlines:  Entry portal opens.  Entry deadline: April 5.

In 2013, SNAG will award three scholarships, in the amounts of $2,000,
$1,500, and $1,000.  And we will again administer the $3,000 Hoover & Strong Scholarship for production jewelry design by a graduate student.  At least one of the three Endowment scholarships will be awarded to an undergraduate student.

This year's jurors are Michael Gayk, Katie Macdonald, Sadie Wang, and Cari Stefani.

In addition to the monetary awards, the recipients of these four scholarships all receive a complimentary membership in SNAG, and their work is featured on a four-color postcard sent out to an extensive list.

Submissions for all four scholarships is done through the CaFE website Deadline: March 15.

2013 Meiss/Mellon Author's Book Awards

CAA will provide awards to emerging scholars (those with PhDs earned during the past six years) who are under contract with a publisher for a manuscript on art history or visual studies to help defray the high costs of image licensing and reproduction for monographs in art history and visual studies. The grant is a temporary measure to provide financial relief to early-career scholars in art history and visual studies who are responsible for funding the image programs in their publications.

Awards will be made twice each year in the spring and fall for print and digital publications. Awardees will be selected on the basis of the quality and demonstrated financial need of their project. CAA anticipates awarding between eight and ten Meiss/Mellon Author's Book Awards in 2013.

The jury comprises distinguished mid-career or senior scholars who are members of CAA and whose specializations cover a broad range of art scholarship. The jury has discretion over the number of awardees and the size of the grant to be awarded to each.

Applications for the first round of the Meiss/Mellon Author's Book Award are now being accepted.  For further information, please review the  Application Guidelines and the  Application Process, Schedule, and Checklist.

Deadlines: Spring submission is March 15. Fall applications are due October 1.

Royal Treasures from the Louvre Extended

The Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco announces their current special exhibition, Royal Treasures from the Louvre, has been extended through March 31.

This exhibition highlights an unparalleled collection of decorative arts from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, including some of the most exquisite treasures of the French monarchy from the time of Louis XIV until the Revolution of 1789.

The showcased objects in the exhibition are dazzling:  the gemmes de la couronne, precious hardstone vases collected by Louis XIV; the présents du Roi, including diamond-and-gem snuffboxes made for the royal family to present as gifts; the Gobelins manufactory's masterwork mosaic tabletop of semiprecious stones; personal items made for Louis XV's private use or for use by his mistresses, Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, including exquisite Sèvres porcelain and silver; and Marie-Antoinette's personal collection of precious vases made of agate and other hardstones.

Many of the objects in the exhibition have never been shown in the United States and indeed, several have never left France. Visit the exhibition website for more information.
