Week of February 4, 2013
Greetings!
Highlighting members' achievements is not only is yet another way we publicize the work of our members, it also helps all the other members learn about opportunities they might not have know about. Please email us news of your awards, exhibitions, recognition, accomplishments and any other achievements together with an image of your work. Send everything to snagnews@snagmetalsmith.org.
And watch for more spotlights on previous Lifetime Achievement recipients. Several years ago we embarked on doing more to make information about all of our Award recipients available on our website. As you can imagine, it takes time to go back through all of previous recipients but we are making our way through them.
Don't forget to read our latest technical article, from Ana Lopez. The article is about how a non-enamelist came to design and build a large, torch-fired enameling kiln. You'll always find the new blog posts under News and towards the bottom of our homepage, and I'll link to the latest news every week in Riveting News. You can also sign up to receive the RSS feed so they are automatically delivered to you every week. Be sure you are using Springboard, our new searchable hub of opportunities. If you are posting an opportunity, check out the Enhanced post option. The Enhanced listings get an image, an opening teaser, space for more details than the standard post, a highlighted background, a bold title, and it automatically appears as a Springboard post on our site's homepage. For all this, non-members pay $100 but for SNAG members it's only $25. Yet another benefit of being a SNAG member.

Gary Griffin Named 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Gary Griffin led the Cranbrook Academy of Art's Metalsmithing Department for 22 years, retiring in 2006 and moving to New Mexico. During his Cranbrook tenure, Griffin maintained an active practice focusing on utilitarian works for residences and institutions, resulting in regular commissioned work, from tables, furniture and lighting to gates, fences and railings.
As he prepared to leave his post at the Academy, Cranbrook coordinated the exhibition, Critical Mass, which chronicled the careers of 121 students who had studied under him.
Gary has received numerous awards and fellowships including two National Endowment of Arts awards in 1976 and 1977. In 2005, he was named an American Craft Council College of Fellows, and in 2008 he was the Metal Museum's Master Metalsmith.
