Executive Director
Week of November 12, 2012

Greetings!

This week has seen some highs and lows.  People went gaga over our exhibition at SOFA Chicago featuring work from this year's Exhibition in Print.  Kudos to go to Kristin Beeler and Caroline Gore, with the support of Nicole Jacquard, Jessica Calderwood, and all the volunteers who helped throughout the show.  Check out the images below.

The audience also loved all of our lectures. Thank you to our presenters Andrew Kuebeck, Heejin Hwang, Emanuela Duca, Marjorie Simon, and Paul McClure.  And last, I hope everyone who filled the room for the coffee break enjoyed a good hour of conversation.  Thank you to Anne Fiala for pulling the whole thing together and to the Chicago Metal Arts Guild for inviting us to co-host again.

Sadly two of our board members resigned this week, both for professional reasons.  Caroline Gore is at the beginning of a year-long sabbatical and wants to be able to focus on her work.  Her term would have expired with the Toronto conference in May, so we had to say goodbye to her six months early.  Marthe Le Van began working as Communications Director for the Art Jewelry Forum on November 1, which she recognized would be a conflict of interest if she continued to serve on the SNAG board.  Marthe is at the very beginning of her term, and the board is discussing how to fill her seat.  We wish both of them the best in their respective endeavors.  We understand that work is the priority.

Last, we have resurrected SNAG's LinkedIn page LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network. Manage your professional identity.  Build and engage your professional network. Join SNAG's page and take advantage of this opportunity to engage in a professional dialogue with your peers. Access knowledge, insights and opportunities. It's a great way to connect your artistic and business needs.

Call for Entries for Undergraduate Students

Faktura is a juried exhibition of jewelry and objects, sponsored by Winthrop University and the Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths.

The origin of "faktura" is Russian Constructivism, the visual demonstration of properties inherent to materials.  Objects submitted for consideration should hold a truth to materials that may be evident in the physical properties, history, origin, and/or sourcing of the materials that are used to create the work.

Open to all students currently enrolled in an undergraduate level college/university metals jewelry or designed objects program to enter jewelry and designed objects that relate to this theme.

The juror is Susie Ganch, associate professor/metal area lead, Department of Craft and Material Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.  Visit the Winthrop website for more information.

Deadline:  December 5.

Guild Partner Grant Program
The Arts Business Institute introduces a new Guild Partner Grant program. President Obama has made micro-manufacturing start-ups one of his priorities for the next four years. The program includes a two-day workshop, private one-on-one critiques and production advice, and matching funds for guild booth exhibits at the Buyers Market. Grants up to $50,000 will be awarded for a two-year program.

The Museum of Arts and Design seeks a Curatorial Intern to assist the curator of contemporary art jewelry. Interns will learn the curatorial process, engage in research, work in collection databases, and communicate with artists.

Projects include preparation and research for the exhibition, "Entitled Mutiple Exposures," on the use of photography in contemporary and historical jewelry.  This exhibit explores the compelling personal, social, cultural, and artistic issues being addressed today through the pairing of these media. Interns will also research artists and concepts for other potential incoming exhibits.

The position is unpaid, however the Museum will participate in school credit programs. Interns are expected to work January to May, at least two days per week.

Exhibition in Print 2013 Call for Related Work
Metalsmith's 2013 Exhibition in Print will explore the power of the photograph to express the spirit of an object.

The photograph is an integral part of a maker's practice. It not only records a work, it presents a maker's intention and, as such, defines how a work is understood. More significantly, the photograph is often the only way an object is experienced; it becomes the filter by which the work is seen by others.
Each work will be shown in at least two of three photographic approaches:  a formal high-quality studio photograph; a casual smart-phone shot; an experimental image reinforcing the concept or function of the work.

Guest curator Susan Cohn seeks examples related to this theme of photographic translation.  Find out more on SNAG's website
  Deadline: January 15, 2013.
