Week of October 29, 2012
Greetings!
We have posted an updated description of next year's virtual exhibition on SNAG's website. We've changed the title to "Contemporary Goldsmithing: Tradition & Excellence." George Sawyer, celebrated goldsmith and maker of exquisite mokume gane, will jury this exhibition with two other jurors of his choice. Watch in spring 2013 for the Call for Entries with instructions on how to submit work. The jurors will be looking for high-quality images of exemplary work by contemporary, traditional goldsmiths.
SNAG has uploaded a Maker Profile Page for our 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mary Ann Scherr. Her work ranges from automobile design with The Ford Motor Company to toy design, from fashion design to graphic and book illustration, from experimental metal research to product development. Thank you to Michael Gayk, Chair of our Online Presence Committee, who volunteered to help any Lifetime Achievement Award recipient upload their complimentary Maker Profile Page.
And my last reminder to come to the coffee break at SOFA Chicago co-hosted by SNAG and the Chicago Metal Arts Guild. Friday November 2 from 11:00 to noon, we'll have coffee, tea, bagels and pastries. Room 328, just down the hall from the two jewelry/metals morning lectures sponsored by SNAG.

October issue of Metalsmith The new issue of Metalsmith is in the mail and the digital version will be emailed out today.
You will want to spend some quality time with this issue. Starting with the feature article on the work of Petra Class. And from there it just gets better and better.
This issue's "In Production" is about George Sawyer, and "In Fashion" exclaims how addictive the costume jewelry of GAS Bijoux is.
We've got an article about the bold wire work of Barbara Stutman, and a fascinating piece about the missing ninth bracelet of Tutankhamen. Then a complete shift to contemporary handmade ornate musical horn instruments, an examination of Peter Skubic's art jewelry, and a tribute to William Frederick from silversmith Jeffrey Herman.
Don't forget: Watch for our launch of Megan Auman's new column in Metalsmith, "Value Added," in the January issue.

National Endowment of the Humanities Medal Competition
The National Endowment for the Humanities is seeking a new design for the National Humanities Medal, which is bestowed annually by the President of in a White House ceremony. NEH invites thoughtful and creative solutions for a new National Humanities Medal.
The new medal is intended to premiere at the 2013 National Humanities Medal ceremony and will serve the Endowment far into the future.
A panel of distinguished judges will be selected for their expertise in the fields of art, sculpture, minting, and cultural management. They will advise the Chairman of NEH, who will choose the final winning design. For more information including design requirements and judging criteria: http://humanitiesmedaldesign.challenge.gov/
Translating the idea of the humanities-the study of literature, philosophy, history, and other subjects-into a visual form is a challenging task. The design should reflect the importance of the award and of the humanities in a graceful, insightful, and ultimately beautiful manner.

Raising Awareness
A fantastic event was coordinated by Gabriel Craig and David Huang, at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
To raise awareness about metalsmithing, Gabriel, David and 30 other volunteer metalsmiths raised 50 vessels, interacted with 250,000 people from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and handed out 1,000 copies of Metalsmith.
During the weekday there were literally busloads and busloads of school groups of every age stopping by to watch them work. The students lined the edges of the space watching and asking questions.
From Gabriel: "For us this is what craft-based performance, activism and advocacy work is all about, building bridges to the broader culture and providing an opportunity to continue to engage. Raising Awareness was truly a team effort..Each person brought their own background, practice, interests and style to bear on the project, which resulted in the presentation of contemporary metalsmithing as a relevant, vibrant and diverse cultural practice."
