Greetings!

I am excited to announce the launch of SNAG's new virtual exhibition space, and the opening of our inaugural virtual exhibition, "The Body Adorned."  Juried by independent curator Gail M. Brown, this exhibition explores "adornment as experience," art jewelry exhibited on the landscape of the body rather than in free-floating space. There's also a beautiful exhibition catalog through Blurb.com, designed by SNAG member Christine L. Sundt.  And here's a special offer that gives you 20% off the book. Use the code FANS at checkout and get 20% off the catalog from now until October 23, 2012.

The space is elegantly designed by Social Design House.  It's easy to flow from piece to piece, to read each Artist's Statement, look at other work by each artist on their websites, and see each piece's caption information.  This experience is quite different from the image grids you normally see presented as online exhibitions.  Share this on your Facebook page, with friends, or pin it on Pinterest.

The Body Adorned

We are extremely proud of this addition to our website, and it opens up a world of possibilities for SNAG.  Watch for next year's virtual exhibition, "All that Glisters," a survey of work by classical goldsmiths juried by George Sawyer and two others still to be determined.

SNAG is deeply grateful to Nicole Jacquard, Natalie O'Neal, Jamie Obermeier, Bryan Park, and the folks at Social Design House for making our vision come alive.  We also thank the Windgate Charitable Foundation for their generous support of this program.

Sharon Church and Bruce Pepich
Congratulations to Sharon Church and Bruce Pepich, two of the 2012 American Craft Council Fellows.  They have both deeply enriched our field.  Knowing that they were nominated and elected by their peers must make this an especially rewarding moment in their careers.

If you are at SOFA Chicago be sure to see the ACC special exhibition "Among Fellows: An Exhibition of Work by the 2012 College of Fellows."

Chicago Art Furniture Exposition (CAFE)

Announcing a new exposition of one-of-a-kind handcrafted furniture and decorative accents, CAFE will feature furniture, lamps, mirrors, sculptures, paintings, rugs, and tableware.

Held April 19-21, there is special accommodation for Emerging Talent, craftspeople who have been practicing for five years or less.

LAST CHANCE Lifetime Achievement Award Nominations
SNAG 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
SNAG is seeking nominations for its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award.  The recipient will be honored in a number of ways: the Toronto conference next May will be dedicated to the recipient followed by an award ceremony, and essays about the recipient will appear both in Metalsmith and on our website.

This award is SNAG's highest honor and is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of metalsmithing.  Selection of the award recipient is made by a committee of 3 members, and the makeup of the committee changes each year.

Any member of SNAG may nominate someone for the Lifetime Achievement Award.  The nominees do not have to be SNAG members.
Nomination packages must include a resume or biography of the nominee along with a letter outlining the reasons for the nomination from the person making it, and at least two letters of support of the nomination from other SNAG members.

Deadline to receive nomination packages is October 13.  Email all materials to Mary Lee Hu, Chair, Lifetime Achievement Award Committee, with "Lifetime Achievement Nomination" in the Subject line.  Once nominated, an individual's name remains under consideration for 5 years, after which time, if not selected, he or she must be re-nominated to stay eligible for consideration.

LAST CHANCE Exhibitions Planning Committee's
Call for Partnership Proposals
SNAG is seeking partners in co-producing and/or supporting exhibitions that advance our mission to educate audiences about the historical, artistic and cultural importance of jewelry, metalwork and design.

The Exhibition Partners program will award up to $2,500 to support one proposed exhibition in 2013. Deadline for proposals: October 15. Click here for more information.

Early in 2012, this program helped support the exhibition Transformation 8: Contemporary Works in Small Metals (Elizabeth R. Raphael Founder's Prize series), at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh.
Call for Submissions Metal Patination Techniques
Quarto Publishing is working on a new jewelry book, "SURFACE: Metal Patination Techniques,"by Matthew Runfola, publishing next year in the UK and America.  We're currently seeking images of finished pieces to feature throughout the book.  Contact Sarah Bell.

This book will be a resource and how-to guide to metal patination. It will be organized by metal for ease of access and then arranged by patina color and other variables such as application methods.
