Week of September 10, 2012
Greetings!
Our inaugural one-day business symposium "Forging Entrepreneurs: Tools and Skills for Business Success" was a huge success. Seventy artists hungry for insights filled the Society for Contemporary Craft. Here are just two of the responses on the post-event survey:
"I want to say that the symposium truly exceeded my expectations. The presenters were very generous with their knowledge and I was inspired at the insight and thoughtfulness of their presentations. Thanks so much, I recommend it to anyone!"
"I've been out of college and doing craft fairs/consigning/Etsy-selling for several years. I've been feeling a bit stuck and uninspired and this symposium came at a perfect time for me."
Thank you again to all our great presenters: Glen Gardner, Adam Kenney, Brigitte Martin, Ron McNeish, Michelle Pajak-Reynolds, Todd Pownell, Beverly Tadeu, and Wayne Werner. Paying homage to the site of Forging Entrepreneuers I'm featuring Pittsburgh designer Paul Michael Bierker in this week's Maker Profile.
We are working on securing the site for the 2013 Forging Entrepreneurs, somewhere on the west coast, and I'll announce it here just as soon as we know.

Lifetime Achievement Award Nominations
 | J. Fred Woell 2012 Recipient SNAG Lifetime Achievement Award
|
SNAG is seeking nominations for its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award. The recipient will be honored in a number of ways: the Toronto conference next May will be dedicated to the recipient followed by an award ceremony, and essays about the recipient will appear both in Metalsmith and on our website. This award is SNAG's highest honor and is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of metalsmithing. Selection of the award recipient is made by a committee of 3 members, and the makeup of the committee changes each year.
Any member of SNAG may nominate someone for the Lifetime Achievement Award. The nominees do not have to be SNAG members. Nomination packages must include a resume or biography of the nominee along with a letter outlining the reasons for the nomination from the person making it, and at least two letters of support of the nomination from other SNAG members. Deadline to receive nomination packages is October 13. Email all materials to Mary Lee Hu, Chair, Lifetime Achievement Award Committee, with "Lifetime Achievement Nomination" in the Subject line. Once nominated, an individual's name remains under consideration for 5 years, after which time, if not selected, he or she must be re-nominated to stay eligible for consideration. |

iMakeJewelry Call for Images and Feature Ideas
Victoria Lansford is seeking images and input for future updates of her iPhone™ app, iMakeJewelry. iMakeJewelry is an ongoing project to help jewelers and metalsmiths and input from the metalsmithing community is vital.
Submit images of stones and jewelry: Future updates of the app will include more images in the Stones reference section of the app. If your image is used, credit to you will appear within the app.
Each image will be evaluated on the quality of the photography, how well it depicts the stone it features, and the craftsmanship of the object. Images that show more than one type of stone in a single piece won't be considered unless they can be cropped appropriately.
Submit ideas, such as new calculation features, tables, or additions to existing features in the app. Contributors of ideas used will be given credit within the app in future updates. Deadline: Ongoing. The purchase of iMakeJewelry is not required. For details on image requirements and where to submit images or ideas, email victoria@victorialansford.com.

SOFA Chicago
For those of you who have taken advantage of the SNAG room block at the Comfort Inn & Suites in past year, we're sorry to report that that room block does NOT exist this year. The Comfort Inn was bought out by another company and turned into a boutique hotel at $179/night. We've not found room blocks in the area at better rates, and hope to have this worked out by next year.

Superstition Exhibition Opens at Toronto International Airport "Superstition," a juried exhibition of fine jewelry and metalsmithing originally produced by Zilberschmuck earlier this year, will be exhibited in the departure area of the Toronto International Airport from September 10 to January 11. An estimated 600,000 people will go through this area during that time.
For the past eight years, Zilberschmuck has invited Canadian artists to explore the formal and conceptual ideas behind the meaning of a specific word, with the work exhibited at their gallery space in Toronto. In 2012 the word was "superstition."
SNAG has been a co-sponsor of this annual Canadian exhibition for the past six years. |
