Week of August 6, 2012

Greetings!

I'm starting something new with this issue of Riveting News, giving a shout out at the end to one of our Maker Profiles each week.

This is not a popularity contest, it's just me noticing what people are making that catches my eye.  This week it's John Lunn.  He makes flutes, entirely by hand. He uses traditional forming & chasing techniques and builds unique instruments from raw precious metal.

John is also one of a number of artists featured in "Musical Metal: Contemporary Ornate Instruments," by Kirsi Hastings, in the October issue of Metalsmith.
Saul Bell Design Award Competition

Now in its second decade, the Saul Bell Design Award competition invites you to challenge yourself. Stretch your boundaries. Overcome limitations. Push your most innovative ideas into the spotlight. Inspire us all.

This invitation is extended to all members of the jewelry or hollowware community and students of a jewelry or hollowware program.  The Grand Prize is a $10,000 Rio Gift Certificate.

Their esteemed panel of judges is comprised of a broad spectrum of respected jewelry artists and designers. Submissions are judged on the following criteria:

  • The innovation and uniqueness of the design.
  • The successful incorporation of media into the design.
  • The wearability of the piece (except hollowware/art objects) as adornment.
  • The quality of workmanship (for final judging).
For more information click here. Deadline: September 14.
