Thanks: It's Been an Honor Serving as Acting Dean

All things must end, and my time acting as a dean will soon conclude. One of the reasons I was attracted to serving as acting dean was curiosity about the position and what it would teach me. The last 11 months have taught me many things, but the three lessons that stand out are that the College of Communication Arts and Sciences is resilient; it is of high quality; and it is growing.

Creative Advertising Grad Honored for Having Highest GPA

 

Creative Advertising major Henrik Blix was one of six students who were recognized with Board of Trustees' Awards for having the highest grade point average at the close of their last semesters in attendance as undergraduates at MSU. Blix and the other students were honored at the Dec. 12 Board of Trustees meeting. They also were recognized at their commencement ceremonies on Dec. 13. A member of the Honors College, Blix graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Student Earns National Grant to Fight Sexual Assault

 

Media and Information senior Laura Swanson is one of only two students across the nation to receive this year's $1,800 iAspire Grant, a national award for students who are working to affect change on the issue of sexual violence on college campuses. As a recipient of the award, Swanson was flown to Los Angeles to appear on the nationally syndicated "Dr. Phil Show."

Award-Winning Filmmaker Michael Moore
Visits College, Delivers Commencement Speech

 

A select group of College of Communication Arts and Sciences students and faculty had an opportunity to meet and listen to Academy Award winning filmmaker Michael Moore, who visited the CAS Building prior to receiving an honorary doctorate of humanities and speaking at the undergraduate commencement ceremony for the college.

New Animation Course Offered in the Spring

 

A new course that will allow MSU students to create their own animations is open for enrollment for spring 2015. The 15-week course, JRN 492: Storytelling Through Animation, will take students through interactive coursework as they learn about the animation process and what it takes to create an animation to tell a story. Stacey Fox, Transdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence in the School of Journalism, will teach the course.

Communication Student Contributes to Book

 

Communication major Kenneth J. Williams Jr. is one of five students who contributed to a book recently published by the MSU Libraries, titled "Speak Out! The MSU Student Anthology on Civil and Human Rights."

Class Project Gives Students New Outlook

 

Assistant Professor of Advertising Henry Brimmer's name can be found all along the first floor of the CAS Building as his students' work dots the walls. One of the more recent projects his students worked on that currently appears throughout the first floor corridor is the brick project by his Advanced Layout and Design class (ADV 326), the second class in the creative track in the advertising major.

Student Interns with McLaren Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute 

   

"All of my internships together have given me a great base of knowledge and experience in a variety of contexts that will allow me to feel comfortable treating a wide variety of clients in the future," said Holly Young, a student in the Communicative Sciences and Disorders master's program.
