Issue: #87July/2015

Dear (Contact First Name),

So, July is here.  One half of 2015 is officially in the books.  And so far a gent by the name of John Tewksbury, of Wellcott Springs in Idaho, is the only person not to have announced being a candidate for the President of the United States in 2016.

(btw, John, to the best of my knowledge, does not exist)

Am I the only person that would love to see Donald Trump and Sarah Palin get together and live on a houseboat going up and down Mississippi, solving crimes along the way?

Many of you know that Microsoft has a fiscal calendar that ends on June 30th.  Simplex-IT spent a fair amount of time actually working with companies to take advantage of the incentives that Microsoft has.  We ended up closing about 7 or so deals (either 365 or other licensing) in the last 48 hours of the month.  Thanks to Zoey for keeping track of these things.

We saved our customers about $14,000 by signing them up in June.

Ok, moving on.

Took 3 of the 4 grandkids to Washington DC with the missus.  All were well behaved.  Got pulled aside by the Secret Service for about 20 minutes because of my wife (true story).  Her plan almost succeeded.  Almost.

On the quasi-sad side of things, I've made a decision that I've been contemplating for much of this year.  You'll see the details elsewhere, but this month will be the final monthly free Lunchinar.  As you know, Simplex-IT has always been about sharing our knowledge with others, and the Lunchinar was a big part of that.  Started in January 2009 (I think), we've had a great run.

But the attendance has been dropping, and our webinars have been growing (in both attendance and the number that we put on).

The last regularly scheduled one is on the 15th.  You should come.  Seriously.  I mean it.

But we're going to be doing some other things in its place, but online and...field trips.  Keep tuned in for more on that.

Also the Plain Dealer apparently ran out of interesting people to profile.  Last Sunday Diane DiPiero ran a very nice profile of yours truly.

Our new phone system/service is working out quite nicely.  I hope to get some info out sooner than later on that.

Coming to the picnic?  C'mon, you know you want to.

Our new web site is done, but not out quite yet.  Have to finish up some pieces, especially the blog.

Free (last) Lunchinar: How to Get Windows 10 (and should you?)

Windows 10.  Let the hoopla begin.  July 29th is the release date.  Obviously Microsoft was looking for just the right way to celebrate "National Lasagna Day."

And the upgrade will be free!  Well, free to a lot of people.  Windows 7, 8.1?  Yup.  Well, except for Enterprise users.  Unless you have Software Assurance.

And of course you need to Reserve your upgrade.

Does that include Windows Phone?  Well, of course.  If the phone OEM isn't blocking it.  And depending on your carrier.

Are you the IT guy for your company?  It'd be kind of funny if you came in the next day to a lot of workstations upgrading to Windows 10.  Well, funny to us, anyway.

Free Office Webinar: Introduction to OneDrive

Access your files anywhere and with any device using OneDrive (webinar)

OneDrive is the free cloud based storage solution from Microsoft. It's accessible from any device, and much easier than emailing files or using a flash drive. A lot of our devices don't even have USB ports, and I'd always lose those things anyway.

RSVP for the webinar by clicking here

OneDrive comes with your Microsoft account, and you get 15GB of space. If you need more, you can purchase more - anywhere from 100GB for $1.99/month to 1 TB for $9.99 per month. In Windows 8 and later you can access OneDrive from the One Drive app tile.

OneDrive for Business comes with most Microsoft Office 365 accounts, and you get 1TB of space. It's very similar in function to the personal OneDrive (in fact it gets downright confusing sometimes).

Managing Multiple Projects with Project Online

Microsoft Project is really great for managing one project schedule, but what happens when you have more than one project to manage? Sure, you can view the project indivually, but did you know Microsoft Project Online has views to show consolidate project information? Sorted, grouped, sliced and diced however you'd like!

Click here to RSVP for the webinar

Project Online is a cloud based solution, similar to Microsoft Project Server (the on premise solution). It's designed to help you manage multiple projects, resources, budgets, etc and get an overview view of all your projects.

You can still start off by creating a project in MS Project or Project Online. Project Online has the capability to create new project schedules, so if you don't have the full version of MS Project, it's no problem. Think of it as a scaled down, web based version of MS Project. It has the basics to get you by, but if you're doing a lot of schedule development, you'll want MS Project Professional.

Once you have your Project schedules created, you can view their status on your main Project Online page, called Project Center (shown below).

End of an Era - Goodbye lunchinars

We first started the monthly Lunchinar concept back in January of 2009.  A simple idea, we'd just invite people to the Simplex-IT office, get some pizza, share some ideas about what's going on in IT.  No sales pitch, nothing fancy.

Within the first six months, we outgrew the office, and found a great home the Hattie Larlham's Café in Hudson.

We've shown Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.  All months before their release.  Google Glass, cloud servers, various versions of Office.  Business Continuity, Social Media for small to medium businesses.

3 years ago we started the "Geek Raffle" which raised funds for Hattie Larlham in December.

Then we started videotaping the event, and editing them for posting on YouTube.  John Harrow took care of that.

Fast forward to 2015.

Announcing our 8th Annual Picnic

(now with Microsoft and...Meeples?)

Simplex-IT started in August 2007.  In 2008 we celebrated our new offices with a picnic.  And we haven't looked back (except to see who's been following us).

We just like to get together with folks and have a good relaxing time.  We usually have some technology out to play with, a couple of games...that sort of thing.  No big deal.

And we're going to do this again...except different.  We're bringing in some friends to help us celebrate.

Book of the month

"The Post-American World Release 2.0" by Fareed Zakaria

I confess...I like Fareed Zakaria.  He's a host over at CNN, and he's a columnist for both Time and the Washington Post.  Yup, he's got an agenda, but for the most part I like his reasoning and his ability to see the interplay of trends and processes.

The original Post American World was written in 2008.  It was updated in 2011 to include some thoughts about the wonderful financial call-it-what-you-will that happened soon after.

It's an interesting premise.  The 21st century is going to see a lot of changes.  Not all of them are doom and gloom.  But the positioning of the United States is going to be significantly different at the end of the century versus the beginning.

"Developing" countries such as Brazil, India, Russia and China are hardly worthy of the term "developing" any more.  And the relative importance of the US in terms of economic dominance is going to change.  Not because of trouble in the US, but because of prosperity elsewhere.

Plain Funny

I'm not sure about this one.  As in is it funny, educational, or downright scary?  The answer is...yup.

We're all going to be replaced by robots.  I, for one, welcome our my new robot overlords.  But I always figured I'd be left with nothing to do but play video games.

Well, the robots are way ahead of me on that (this is actually a fascinating look at AI development).
