Issue: #80December/2014

80 issues.  80 Freakin' issues.  For some reason that number strikes me.

I keep in mind that the number 80 doesn't divide nicely into a specific number of years.

It's just a lot of newsletters. For most of the time we've been sending to well over 2000 people each month (we're now at around 2,600). So that leaves us with about 160,000 emails hitting people's inboxes.

I never dreamed that I could be that obnoxious so effectively and efficiently.

But we're not done, not by a long shot.  Over the next couple of months I think you're going to see some significant changes to how we're organized.  Our new Project Management Practice will take better form, and you'll also start to see details of our Database Practice.

Of course our primary focus will continue to be our IT practice.  Actually the three will fit together quite nicely and efficiently.

We actually added three videos to the web this month, with three more in development.  I actually enjoy my "Crotchety Olde Geek" series (this is #7).  Keep in mind that when I make those videos, I purposely spend no more than 15 minutes putting one together.

We also added a Lunchinar video (Is IT Obsolete?) and our first Project Webinar (Into to Project Online).  I need to finish editing our last Office Webinar (Intro to Excel), sorry...missed the deadline for the newsletter (so it really should've been four videos).

Our videos have been viewed over 93,000 times.  Again, our obnoxiousness is extremely well-dispersed<g>.

Wanna have some fun and support a great cause?  Join us for a 4th Annual Geek Raffle, where we raffle off prizes selected by the...well, the Geeks here at Simplex-IT.  All proceeds go to Hattie Larlham.

Thanks again to the Hudson Chamber for their selection of Simplex-IT for one of their annual awards.  The commendation from the Governor was an added surprise.

Not the pardon I was looking for, but it's a start<g>.

You're Invited - Simplex-IT's Annual Networking Lunch and Geek Charity Raffle!

Yes, as usual, this month's lunch is free of charge, with lots of networking for business owners, executives and IT professionals. But instead of our usual business presentation, we'll be having fun raffling off numerous valuable Geek Gifts (like Windows 8 Professional, Office Professional 2013 and other goodies you'll want to own).

And for every dollar in raffle tickets sold, Simplex-IT will match the amount (up to $500), and the entire proceeds will be donated to the Hattie Larlham Foundation (http://www.hattielarlham.org/) - a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities and improving the lives of more than 1,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities in Northeast Ohio.

When: Wednesday, December 17, 2014, 11:30am - 1:00pm

Where: Stow Hampton Inn, 4331 Lakepointe Corporate Drive, off Route 8 at Steels Corners Road

Free Webinar: "PowerPoint 2013 Essentials & More!"

PowerPoint is an essential tool for anyone who has to make presentations. And it's pretty easy to use - once you know your way around. This webcast is designed for the beginning or self-taught user who wants to learn more about the program.

In this session we will learn how to create slides, work with slide layouts and placeholders, as well as the different design themes. We'll look at the autofit feature, add notes, create duplicate slides, move and rearrange slides and work with sections. We will also explore the different views - normal, slide sorter, notes, and presentation view - while learning shortcuts along the way.

Other topics we'll cover include:
* Using the Slide Master feature to format ALL your slides at once
* Reusing and importing slides from other presentations
* Working with SmartArt, Screenshots, transition and animation features
* Printing your presentation for use as a handout
* And more

 Scaling Project Management

Project Management can be a bit intimidating... Scope Statements, Work Breakdown Structures, Risk Management, Resource Management. What's it all for? And do you need it all? Well, it depends.

The beauty of Project Management is that it can be scaled to fit the needs of the organization and project. Not every component may be necessary, and that's ok. A good Project Manager can access a project and the organizational requirements to determine the necessary pieces.

Aimed at Project Managers in the Small to Medium Business world, Simplex-PM offers mentoring, training and support for organizations and people struggling to implement Project Management into their organization.

"Is IT Obsolete?" Lunchinar for 2014 now online!

An annual topic for the last couple of years, this monthly Lunchinar event is now online.  Bob Coppedge leads a discussion on when should companies consider upgrading their hardware, software and/or infrastructure.

This includes when to consider moving to the cloud, what's the best model for companies (on premise, cloud or hybrid?), and what does "obsolete" mean, anyway?

Bob's "Technology:  the Job Killer/Creator" now online

Crotchety Olde Geek #7, "Technology: The Job Killer/Creator" I give a couple of examples of how small numbers of higher paying/skilled jobs are responsible for eliminating a much larger number of lower paying/skilled jobs. And it's only going to get worse.

Plain Funny #80

Ok, on the surface this may not seem funny.  But later this week (all things going well) NASA is scheduled to launch the new spacecraft Orion.

Why is this funny?  Ah, ok...it isn't.  This is actually one of the coolest things to happen in a long while (to me, anyway).  Yeah, the SpaceX and other commercial ships are neat.  But they're designed to "Boldly Go Where We've been Going Pretty Frequently."  The Russians?  Uh, yeah.  50 year old tech.  Space Shuttle?  Absolutely gorgeous, wonderful, but 40 year old tech.

This puppy is brand new.  It's trial run will take it 15 times further from the Earth than the International Space Station.

Coming Soon: Orion Flight Test

Ok, still need a funny?  Gotcha.  Try this (warning:  it's 90 minutes long):
