Issue: #79November/2014

Last month I mentioned that I had 3 grandkids and a 4th one was due right before Halloween.

Well, Matthew Robert Shonk made his entrance the Sunday before Halloween.  Daughter Roberta and her husband Dan are doing fine.

And I'm doing fine as well (I'm sure that was your next question<g>).

As you can imagine, the baby is going through the gauntlet of "oh, he's so cute!" and "adorable" and "Seriously, he's really cute. Not all babies are, but he really is!"

I find the last one curious.  Whether the person is really trying to convince themselves that Matthew is cute (he is, btw), or had a bad recent experience with an ugly baby.

Moving on.

Alaa Hamdan, Network Technician, decided to do something silly.  He went and got married.  In theory he's back from his honeymoon today (Nov 2nd).

And we've added a couple of new interns.  Freddie Bracken joined us in early October on the technical side.  Elizabeth Penko-Suk joined us a couple of weeks later, on the Marketing side.  There are introductory articles elsewhere in the Newsletter about both of them.

We've been busy!

Some new practices are coming to Simplex-IT between now and the end of the year.  The first is Project Management, spearheaded by Patti Smerk.  We've already been working with a couple of clients on this program, and decided to go all out.

The bottom line is we want to make Project Managers better through coaching, training and tools.  You'll see a couple of articles in this eNewsletter, including announcement of a webinar (in addition to our normal Office webinar).

Next month we'll talk about SQL and databases.

New Practice from Simplex-IT: Project Management for Small-Medium Businesses

Project Management for Small-Medium Businesses. Some companies have problems applying project management tools and practices in their day-to-day operations. Tools are too complicated, and way too expensive. The cost of full-blown experienced project managers is prohibitive, and you don't need that skill set full-time, anyway.

Simplex-IT would like to announce a new service led by our own Patti Smerk - Project Management Support for the small to mid sized businesses. We've traditionally seen project management training, tools, and methodologies in place at the large corporate level, but we would like to help bring it to the smaller guys. And Microsoft now has some affordable tools to help with that.

Simplex-IT Previews the New Windows 10 - Free Lunchinar!

In late September Microsoft announced the Technical Preview of its latest operating system, Windows 10. As usual, Simplex-IT was first in line to obtain our copy and we've been putting it through its paces on our test bench since then. We think you're going to be impressed with what we have to report.

The emphasis in this release is on Enterprise users. Responding to feedback, Microsoft has taken great pains to integrate the best features of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and early indications are they have succeeded. In addition, Windows 10 has been designed from the ground up to run across a broad array of form factors - desktops, laptops, tablets, phablets and smartphones. According to Microsoft, "There will be one way to write a universal application, one store, one way for apps to be discovered, purchased and updated across all of these devices."

And there's more. You'll even learn the question everyone has been asking - Whatever happened to Windows 9!?

Welcome to Patti Smerk, Project Guru

Hello there, I'm Patti Smerk. I've recently started working with Simplex-IT, so I wanted to introduce myself.

Where to begin? For the past 7+ years I've been with Booz Allen Hamilton, an IT consulting firm working mainly with large scale government clients on enterprise wide projects and programs. Prior to that I worked in consulting for ALG Computer Consulting and Training, working mainly with local small to mid-sized businesses. Before that, I taught software classes and technical bootcamps at ALG. Consulting just seemed like a natural progression from training, but I still really love when I get the chance to do some training every now and then.

One of the things I'm most passionate about when it comes to technology is Microsoft Project and Project Server/Project Online. I'm a Project Management Professional (PMP) and really like the benefits of using these tools to manage projects and programs. And don't even get me started on dashboards!

Free Webinar: MS Project Online for the Small - Medium Business

Project Management for Small-Medium Businesses. Some companies have problems applying project management tools and practices in their day-to-day operations. Tools are too complicated, and way too expensive. The cost of full-blown experienced project managers is prohibitive, and you don't need that skill set full-time, anyway.

Project Online is the Cloud based version of Microsoft Project Server (and part of the Microsoft Office 365 product mix). Prior to Project Online, an organization had to make a significant investment in Project Server, and often times SharePoint, to have these same capabilities. Now it's available as a service, without requiring the hardware and infrastructure Project Server did. It's a great tool for managing projects, programs, and portfolios of projects, as well as resources, costs, risks etc.

We don't blame you.  Bob will be presenting Windows 10 at the next meeting of the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group (GCPCUG) on Saturday, November 8th.  The meeting is free, and is down at Cleveland State University.

Welcome Simplex-IT's Other Newest Intern!

Hi. My name is Elizabeth. I am the new marketing intern here, at Simplex-IT. I am currently a senior at Hiram College and I will be graduating in the spring. I am a Business Management Major, with a double minor in Entrepreneurship and Communication.  I am involved in many different clubs and organizations on campus, as well as off campus. In my major, my focus is on marketing, as that is what all of my elective classes have been in. I am interested in marketing because I find it fascinating to see what goes into different campaigns and how they are structured. I also like being able to be in a field that is constantly changing and where I am constantly learning new things.

Outside of school and work, I love to travel. I have been all over the world with my family, as well as with friends.  I also love to enjoy time with my family and friends!

Windows 10 is alive at Simplex-IT

Bob here.  Spoiler alert:  Everything on Windows 10 so far has installed quickly and easily.

I know, I know...kinda wanted a train wreck myself.

So, here's the scenario.  I've got an older Samsung 700T tablet.  4GB Ram, 80GB SSD hard drive.  I bought that tablet during Windows 8 Beta...excuse me, Pre-Release days.  In fact, here's quote from the article I wrote back in April 2012:

"We decided to begin our experience with a full-blown Windows 8 tablet device. We selected the Samsung 7000T-1 A. With its Intel dual core I5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of solid-state disk space, this puppy came loaded. Now the MSRP of this tablet is about $1500, so it's not positioned to compete with any of the Apple products. What it does do, however, is give the full Windows experience."

Here's the thing.  I downloaded, created a bootable USB drive with Windows 10, installed Windows 10 on the tablet and configured Office 2013 (and my 365 configurations) on it.

Email and Internet slow? Could it be....IPv6?!?!

Alaa here. Recently, Simplex-IT techs received calls about slow Internet connections and slow Outlook mail flow.

After some troubleshooting and different attempts to resolve this issue, we stumbled upon Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and as part of the troubleshooting process, we decided to disable this item.

Interestingly enough, by disabling IPv6 everything just worked, Internet connections were faster and mail flow was normal again.

So, what is IPv6? It's a way to allow a lot more devices to be on the internet.  Learn more by going here.

Now, we're not saying IPv6 is broken.  But a lot of ISP's (the folks who give us internet access) haven't completely implemented their support for IPv6.  And we think that's what is behind the issue.

Welcome Simplex-IT's Newest Intern!

Hi, my name is Freddie Bracken. I go to the Portage Lakes Career Center in Green. I am technically a student at Manchester High School. I am a member of the Technical Honor Society, and I am also a student ambassador.

I have been interested in computers since I was 4 years old when my dad brought home an old desktop. His friend set up the very first Grand Theft Auto video game and I was hooked. Ever since then I wanted to learn more about computers and how they work.

I eventually saved up enough money to build my very first gaming desktop. I spent hours looking up parts, and learning about all of the different hardware.

I taught myself most of the things I know about computers by reading and fiddling around with my own stuff. I eventually started doing my own independent contracting and after that everyone started coming to me with their computer problems.

At Simplex-IT I spend a lot of time fixing computers with hardware problems.
