Plain Funny #74
Issue: #74June/2014

Man, it's been a busy month. 5 speaking engagements, 2 conferences, 1 boot camp.

This will actually be a fairly short monthly ramble, my apologies. I'm writing this part of the newsletter around 9am on Monday the 2nd. And the newsletter that goes out will actually be without a couple of things. And whose fault is this?

It's all mine, baby. Yup.

But back to business.

First of all, congrats to Senior Tech Steve Buchwald for getting his first Server 2012 Cert. The annoying thing is that I asked him if he could do it and about two weeks later he emailed me confirmation of passing the test. Yup, he already knows the stuff. Like I said, annoying.

Speaking of Steve, he and I attended

a Microsoft Boot camp in Columbus dealing with Microsoft's Azure offering. We've been using it in house for a bit, but we're looking to increase it as an offering to customers. More on that to come.

Speaking of, well, me, I attended a Sophos Partner Conference in Las Vegas in May, and came away with a new perspective on Security as a process, not as a gathering of products. You're going to hear more on that in the coming months.

Also, security on mobile devices? Scares me a lot more than it did a month ago. Again, more on that to come.

Hey, have you ever attended a Lunchinar? Yes? No? Well, either way, I'd love to get some feedback from you about our program. Click here to take our quick survey (and possibly win a Simplex-IT Glitter lamp!).

Had fun talking about Google Glass (and a lot of other stuff) at May's AITP meeting, with about 40 or so folks in attendance.

And then spoke to the Ohio CPA's gatherings in Youngstown and later in Cleveland on IT trends. They keep asking me back, I'll keep showing up!

Speaking of showing up, are you coming to our picnic in August? You should RSVP for that. You really should.

Finally, did you know that we actually posted 30 items beyond our blog entries last month, using Twitter, Facebook and Linked in? Did you know about Android Ransomware, or Microsoft's new Surface Pro 3? You really should follow us, you know.

Complimentary Lunchinar: Office 365 - It's More Than Just Email!

Office 365 is well known as Microsoft's offering for cloud-based email, but there's a lot more under the hood than you may realize. Join Simplex-IT for our free June Lunchinar and we'll show you how organizations just like yours are using Office 365 for enhanced collaboration, video conferencing, mobile file access and so much more! Plus we'll review some of the latest Microsoft offerings for mobile devices, including iPads, iPhones and Android devices.

Note: this will be a BUSINESS discussion and not a technical deep dive, a real world overview about how businesses are increasing productivity and security without a huge up-front investment!

This is an important discussion you won't want to miss!

Sophos: "The Internet of (unsecure) Things"
Bob here, at the annual Sophos Americas Partner Connections conference.

For those of you not familiar with Sophos, a quick explanation.  We've been a partner with Sophos for about 5 or so years, relying on their AV software and other tools for endpoint (workstation/laptop) protection, web controls, encryption, etc.  Here's a quick video that fairly well defines their approach:

Security made simple.
Security made simple.

There's a whole new world opening up in terms of network connectivity.  If you've heard me talk about upcoming IT trends you've heard me talk about it in terms of security (hackable toilets, for example).

Last night brought some of the issues home.  James Lyne, Global Head of Security Research and apparently founder of the "Seriously I like Tweed Jackets Society" spoke last night, and brought the issue to a new level (from my perspective, anyway).

By now you've probably heard...

Help us improve our Lunchinars!
Bob here.  Help us make our Lunchinars better (and maybe win a Simplex-IT Glitter Rocket)!

We're looking for some feedback from you folks. Our Lunchinar program is now in its 6th year. We want to make it even better, but we need some thoughts and ideas from you folks. Please take this survey (it'll just take a couple of minutes, it's only 10 questions).

Click here to take the survey, and thanks!

Simplex-IT's 7th annual picnic is coming!
Bob here.  The picnic is coming.  For the seventh year in a row, Simplex-IT is holding their annual picnic at their World-Wide International Headquarters located in Hudson Ohio.  It's a combination networking, eating, social, kick back and enjoy the afternoon kind of event, and we usually get between 70-80 people.

As always, we'll put together some games (usually involving old equipment we want to throw through tire swings), we'll have some cool stuff to give away, free food and drink.

And we'll have the usual...(click here to read more)

Bob Speaking at Akron CPE Day
Bob here.  After speaking last month to the Cleveland event, the Ohio Society of CPA's apparently didn't learn, and invited me to speak at their Akron event in June.

I'll be presenting twice, once on "IT Trends for the SMB" and...

"Office for Android Beats Google Drive Hands Down" - and It's Free!

John here. We recently reported on the announcement that Microsoft has made Office available for the iPad for free. But another recent move has slipped under the radar - Office for Android has also recently been made available for free! It's long been generally acknowledged that Microsoft's Office is the default business suite for enterprise, despite the growing number of free programs that purport to be compatible, like Google Docs.

This recent article on MakeUseOf, one of my favorite sites, does a good job of comparing the pros and cons of the new Office for Android against Google Docs and comes up with some pretty strong conclusions. Like:

Microsoft Lync: 10 Ways To Do More

Bob here.  When Microsoft Lync was first announced, my immediate response was "They combined Live Meeting and Office Communicator and gave it a traditionally lousy product name (click the Link that will connect through Lync)."

Actually it turns out (wait for it), I was wrong.  Big time.  Lync is actually one of the biggest improvements to the Office lineup that I've seen in a long time.  It's extremely versatile, and the usage (especially in the non-Windows world) keeps improving.

Here's a decent list of things you could be doing if you had Lync.

Btw, the name of the product?  Yeah, I stand by that verdict.  Great product, lousy product name.

Not connected to us?  Here's 30 items you missed last month!

Bob here.  If you don't follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, you missed all of these items we thought were interesting.

Ok, you didn't exactly miss all of these items (after all, we're listing them here).  But you had to wait an entire month.  Wow.

Plain Funny #74

If you're like me, once in a while you'll get the urge to go outside around 2am or so, find a really dark spot, and check out the night sky. Yeah, it's getting harder to find good spots in northeast Ohio, but when you do, it's worth it.

So...I bought into the hype surrounding the meteor shower a couple of weeks ago and woke my lovely wife Julie around 2am with the promise of a fun filled adventure!

Ahhhh....not so much. To be fair to the astronomer folks, this wasn't a traditional annual meteor shower, but essentially a one-off brought on by Comet 209P/Linear. So these were at best guesstimates in terms of how many meteors would be visible.

After about 45 minutes we gave up, having seen 4-5. Still a nice night.

My point? Well, here's a YouTube video that's a collection of 8 years of video taken during meteor showers. I'd suggest you watch it in HD (and full screen) if possible.
