Plain Funny #73
Issue: #73May/2014

So, XP's gone (except for all the machines that are still running XP). Microsoft is starting to talk about Windows 9.

In the same month, HeartBleed came about and told you to be careful about all the web sites you've been to. And then a bug regarding Internet Explorer is discovered that literally have some folks saying don't use any version of IE until it's fixed (see the article later that includes the fix).

In the case of the Internet Explorer bug, MS will be delivering a patch (one would assume), although as of this writing there isn't one available. Of course that patch won't be delivered to XP users.

I wrote the above paragraph this morning.  And wouldn't you know it, Microsoft released a patch this afternoon, and they're including XP users!

Go figure.

One thing that will be delivered is Brandon King. He'll be delivered (probably with air holes in the box, but no promises) to Google in California where he'll be part of their intern program. He'll be returning back to Ohio around September or so. I hope Google knows what they're getting. We're looking to replace him (see the article elsewhere).

Our webinars are going strong, which is kinda cool. Our April 8th "buh-bye to Windows XP" event went reasonably well. We had about 50 people all told. The highlight was that system that Steve Buchwald put together that had most versions of Windows running on a single physical system. And there was no lack of Geek Nostalgia that night.

If you've got a couple of seconds, would you mind taking a brief 5 question survey about our monthly webinar?  We're looking to get some feedback about upcoming topics.  Click here to take it.

I really suggest you read the article about changes to this eNewsletter, which really is more about our social media program. We've added a lot more content both in our blog, eNewsletter, FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. I'd really like some feedback as to whether that additional content is worthwhile?

Next week I'll spend a couple of days in Las Vegas to attend the Sophos Partner conference (they're our anti-virus partner). Then after that it's down to Microsoft to start deep-diving into Microsoft's Azure.

I've been using the beta version of Microsoft's answer to Siri, Cortana.  More on that later this month.

We're also looking for a new intern (it's a paid position, although not much). Usually the position lasts for a couple of months, for a couple of days a week.

Finally, we'd like to welcome the newest member of Simplex-IT, Sir Squirmy II (courtesy of Kevin and Sarah Dutkiewicz) :

Changes to our eNewsletter (and other Social Media stuff)
Yup, and hopefully for the better.

We've been putting out our eNewsletter for about 6 years or so.  And I gotta confess, I'm pretty proud of it.  We haven't changed it a lot.  The content is almost all generated by Simplex-IT folks, and we try to steer clear of the sales-heavy propaganda stuff (except where we think there's a good value).

It's worked pretty well.  I think we've got one of the best eNewsletters in the business.

So let's make it better.

The security of your IT resources is vital to your continued success, but the terms can get confusing.

Internet Explorer Vulnerability...and Fix!

(spoiler alert.  Microsoft has released a patch.  Click the link at the end of the article for details)

Much has been written about the Internet Explorer vulnerability of late.  Here's a good technical article about it.  Here's one more from the general press.  One of the challenges is that so far there have been next to zero reports about sites that are using this exploit (notice the comments section in this article).  A lot of folks were talking about what to do about it.

There seemed to be 3 options:

Tools to Troubleshoot MS SQL Performance

Bob here. We do a lot of work with SQL.  In fact that's our primary role with several of our customers. Maintaining, troubleshooting, all that good stuff.

And one thing is absolutely clear:

A lot of organizations don't know how to measure /maintain /troubleshoot SQL server performance.  And it's understandable.  It can be a complicated configuration, one with many pieces and parts.  And if anyone of them isn't optimally configured...stuff slows down to a crawl.

And the first thought is "let's add hardware!"  And although that usually will improve performance, it often masks what the real problem is.  Poorly formed queries, outdated statistics, server level configurations are just some of the examples. We've seen many examples where tweaking just one aspect of a database results in tenfold performance improvement.

But you need to have a solid understanding of what's going on under the hood.  You have to have a baseline measurement.  And here are some tools that are built in that can help.

If you're not seeing the performance from your SQL environment, contact us here at Simplex-IT.  We can help.

Satya Nadella's "A Data Culture for Everyone" - a response

Bob here.  I read with some interest Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's recent Blog article "A Data Culture for Everyone."  Cool stuff, actually.  And it, along with the release of Office for the iPad is giving an insight into the direction for Microsoft under the leadership of only its 3rd CEO in like a gazillion years.

Unfortunately, the article, like most of the stuff from Redmond that talks about ultimate direction and goals, is buried in consultantspeak and stuff that speaks only to a small subset of us.  But it's important.

We hear the term "Big Data" more and more often in the press.  The idea that huge databases crank out information and give "Big Companies" what they need to grow and thrive.

Fair enough.  But it's just scratching the surface.  And that's the point that Nadella's making, but poorly (at least if he's trying to talk to the Small to Medium business world).

So I'm going to give it a shot.

Simplex-IT's PowerPoint 2013 Webinar now online!

Our March webinar, "PowerPoint 2013:  From Zero to Presentation in 60 Minutes"  is now online.

Welllll, we actually posted this webinar online a month ago.  We then emailed everybody who registered about it being online.  And then promptly forgot to tell everybody else.  Sad.

This is the 4th of our monthly webinars reviewing Microsoft Office 2013's many features

Thankfully, the information is timeless!  Watch and enjoy!

4 Industries Embracing the Cloud.

Bob here. This is a nice little article.  It actually gives some ideas for how different industries can benefit from cloud technologies in terms that are more down to earth than usual.  Plus it refrains from the over-the-top claims we too often see.

The question I'd give to you (other than "are you going to finish those fries?") would be can you think of a critical operation within your organization that would benefit from:

  • Being accessible both locally and remotely?
  • Being accessible both online and offline?
  • Being protected from local and regional service interruptions?

It's those kind of mental exercises that help us create the opportunities for the use of cloud technologies.

Seriously, are you going to finish those fries?  They gave you a lot of them.

Bob speaking on "IT Trends for Small to Medium Business" in Youngstown.

Bob here. I'll be speaking May 14th at the Youngstown CPE Day sponsored by The Ohio Society of CPAs.  The topic?  "IT Trends for Small to Medium Business."

The talk will be similar to the one given back in January,  but updated to include recent issues such as the HeartBleed security issue, the aftermath of the withdrawal of support for Windows XP, and some thoughts as to the impact of Microsoft's new CEO, Sayta Nadella.

Office for your iPad?  You betcha.  More to come?  You betcha by golly!

Also on the list will be next years less sexy retirement.  Say goodbye to Windows Server 2003.

Simplex-IT needs a new Tech!

Bob here.  For those of you who haven't heard, Brandon King was recently offered a position as an intern with Google.  Yup, we think it's because of his familiarity with Google Grass (and, more seriously, Google Glass).

So Simplex-IT is looking to replace him with an entry to mid-level Network/Desktop Engineer (it's a full time position).  We're more interested in hiring the "right" person than the right "level."
