Plain Funny #72
Issue: #72April /2014

There are many of you out there who are silly enough to believe that Spring is here. Of course it isn't, because we haven't had an Indians home game where it's snowing. Yet.

Coming to our April 8th party? You should, you know.  We'll have networking, a chance to see many old versions of Windows and the classic movie "Forbidden Planet."

We're continuing to move forward on a number of fronts. Speaking to 75 or so students in March about careers in IT was pretty cool.

Want to read a good (albeit slightly scary) book? Try "The Second Machine Age" by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee. You can get the gist of it as well from a TED talk that Erik Brynjolfsson gave.

Erik Brynjolfsson: The key to growth? Race with the machines
Erik Brynjolfsson: The key to growth? Race with the machines

Good book, good TED talk.

Seriously, have you thought about coming to our April 8th party?

In the past month we've added two new clients.  Both had new employees who worked at other current clients.  They recommended us for services and projects. I'm not sure how, but I'd like to get a Simplex-IT virus analogy going here.

We're talking Forbidden Planet here. Classic movie. On the big screen. For free.

Nice to see Alaa Hamden get some recognition from his alma mater.

Our monthly webinar is now drawing about 20 people for each webisode. #5 (featuring OneNote) should be good.

Soooo...April 8th. How many friends shall we put you down for?

Our Next Free Lunchinar: "Is BYOD Leading You to BYOB?"

Today, as more employees bring their own mobile devices into the workplace, there is a corresponding increase in risk and headache to the organization. First, mobile devices represent a threat to the corporate IT network as well as its data security.

Often, they do not benefit from the same security and data protection guidelines as other devices, such as desktop computers. Finally, when users bring their own devices they often give greater weight to their own rights on the device than to their employer's need to protect its proprietary data.

How does an organization balance the increased productivity of BYOD with the additional risk?

Join Simplex-IT for our bye-bye XP Party!

You know it's going away. You know you'll miss it.

Why not say goodbye?

April 8th marks the end of support from Microsoft for both Windows XP and Office 2003. Yeah, they're going to continue updating Endpoint, Security Essentials and other security pieces that work with XP. But XP and Office 2003 are going away.

Soooo...howzabout a going away party? And maybe a movie, while we're at it?

So, here's what we did. We're taking over The Kent Stage (um...it's in Kent, 175 East Main Street, Kent, Oh 44240), a really cool theater with a whole bunch of history. We're going to start with a networking event, followed by a big-screen showing of the 1956 classic science fiction movie "Forbidden Planet."

Plus we'll have demos of every version of Windows we could get our hands on.

Introducing Google Grass

As Simplex-IT fans know, Google doesn't hold back.  Whether it be detailed mapping of the Earth, autonomous cars or computerized headgear.

Next on their list?  Your lawn.  Google quietly introduced "Google Grass," which is a combination of the technologies from Google Earth, and cutting edge Drone technology.  Plus a rebirth of a decades-old DoD project that never got off the ground...until now.

The bottom line is Google wants part of the estimated $74 Billion dollar Landscaping industry.  And it wants to do it with some of their existing technologies.

At the heart of it all?  Google wants to cut your lawn.

Complimentary Webinar- "OneNote: How to Capture and Organize Everything!"

Microsoft OneNote is an application designed for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It's been described by some as their favorite Office app and has recently been made available for free on almost any platform. Hours after that announcement on March 17 OneNote jumped to the top of the free application chart on Apple's Mac App Store (sorry, some premium features are available only in the paid version that comes with Office).

If you haven't already, now's your chance to become better acquainted with OneNote - courtesy of Simplex-IT!

This Thursday, April 10, from 11:00am - 12:00 Noon, join our own Michele Bobola for a free, fast-paced webinar and introduction to OneNote.

Announcing the Office you love, now on the iPad

March 27, 2014 - Microsoft has just announced that Office is available for the iPad - specifically, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. That's right, you can get Office for the iPad at the App Store (for free)! This will give you the ability to view, read and present your Office files. For full editing functionality you will need to purchase Office as a subscription through Office 365. This will give you the added capability of installing Office on up to 5 of your devices!

According to Microsoft, "What makes these apps unique is that they strike just the right balance between being unmistakably Office and being designed for the iPad. If you use Office on a PC or Mac, the iPad apps feel very familiar, so you are comfortable and confident using these apps right away. The Ribbon layout and experience is familiar, with the most common commands under Home, and Chart commands automatically show up when you select a chart."

Microsoft Announces OneNote for Mac AND OneNote for Free!

Ask Microsoft to describe their OneNote application and they'll respond by saying it's revolutionizing "the way people capture, annotate and recall all the ideas, thoughts, snippets and plans in their life." Among those who have taken the time to become familiar with it, I've heard some describe it as the most powerful program they use. Now Microsoft is poised to make this multi-faceted application even more compelling. How? They're making OneNote available on the

Mac AND they're making it available to everyone for FREE!

For the first time, OneNote is available on all the platforms you care about: PCs, Macs, Windows tablets and phones, iPad, iPhone Android and the Web! And all your devices are always in sync!

But that's not the best part: Microsoft has announced they are making OneNote available for free

Simplex-IT Employee Makes National News!

No, it's not national news as in ABC, NBC or CBS but we're pretty excited nonetheless! National News is a publication of National College (American National University) and it highlights success stories of their students from campuses across six states.

Simplex-IT is proud to report one of our newest employees, Alaa Hamden, was a front page story in the most recent March 24, 2014 issue. To read the entire article, click here:

Bob speaks to PLCC students about IT Careers

Bob here.  Last month I had the opportunity to represent Simplex-IT and speak (along with several others) with the students at the Portage Lakes Career Center at their 2014 Employability Expo.  The topic?  Careers in the ever-popular field of IT.

Now, as you can imagine, my original idea was that I was to present them of a prime example of how not to develop a career.

Plain Funny #72

Yeah, it's another two-fer this month. But the first one is time-sensitive.

Many of you know of the great Science Fiction comedy series of books started with the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by the late, great Douglas Adams. But what you may not realize is that it was originally written as a radio series back in 1978.

It was absolutely hilarious. And the cast recently got back together for a special BBC Radio live performance. And it's available online for free, but only until April 5th.

Click here to listen and enjoy.  Above all, Don't Panic!
