Plain Funny #70
Issue: #70February/2014

I'm writing this article immediately following the Super Bowl. Ok, we're pretty much done with the holiday binge eating time of the year (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Super Bowl). And we switch immediately from worshipping Peyton Manning to blaming him.

And now we go into the Cleveland Brown's version of playoff season...waiting for the coaching staff to solidify and draft day.

Not that we're going to have much time to follow everything. Here at Simplex-IT, we're pretty busy. We've got:

  • Our monthly webinar on the 13th, this one on Outlook 2013. About 15 people attended last month's webinar focusing on Excel Pivot Tables.
  • Our monthly Lunchinar, which kicked off at our new home last month (a bit packed, but we made it work).
  • I'll be participating in Cuyahoga Falls High School Career Awareness Night for the second year in a row.

I'm happy to see we've got a number of folks joining the monthly webinars. We're still working out a couple of technical glitches, but so far, so good. Of course you can see the previous ones on our YouTube channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/SimplexITBob/videos .

Got an idea for a webinar topic?  Share it with me!

I'm also getting more concerned about Windows XP. I'll probably be doing a couple of blogs/webposts about why. Pay attention to our blog ( http://BizBlog.Simplex-IT.com ) to keep track.

Wanna go see a classic science fiction movie on the big screen? For free?

Then keep April 8th open. We're putting together what we hope is a pretty good-sized (and fun) goodbye event for Windows XP. See the announcement elsewhere in the newsletter or just click here to register.

Join Us at Simplex-IT's Next Lunchinar: "File-Sharing in the Mobile Age - Risk or Reward?"

Today's mobile work force has an increasing need for on-demand document sharing and collaboration. And they'll find the tools, with or without the help of your IT department.

Are you willing to let the consumerization of IT dictate the security (or lack thereof) of your company's documents?

File-Sharing services like DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive and SharePoint are becoming increasingly ubiquitous today because of the need workers have for access to their files anywhere, anytime and on any device. The reward can be great. But what is the risk?

Next Free Webinar:  Outlook 2013 - Making it work for you!

Many of you use Outlook on a daily basis to read your email and track appointments. But are you using all the features effectively? Do you know how to set up customized views instead of just putting up with the default settings? Maybe you want your emails set up a certain way by category or conversation? We can change that to fit your needs.

In this live webcast (the third in our monthly series), trainer Michele Bobola will not only show you the basics on how to...

Microsoft Plays the Name Game - (Again) as SkyDrive Becomes OneDrive!

Perhaps Shakespeare said it best in his play "Romeo and Juliet":

"What's in a name?

That which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet."

While the affection between his two lovebirds was the paramount theme in this story, it is clear that Shakespeare was not a businessperson. Had he been, he would have known that names are VERY important assets, not to be dismissed lightly. Even when challenged by <gasp> love!

So Microsoft, though not distracted by love, but as a result of losing a court battle with UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB over the use of the name "SkyDrive," has announced it is changing the name of its cloud-based storage service to OneDrive (for consumers). The version that comes with Office 365 will change from SkyDrive Pro to OneDrive for Business. This change comes with the promise of even more new features.

"Goodbye Windows XP" Party / Networking / Movie Event - You're Invited!
Say goodbye to XP, do some networking and watch a classic SF movie on the big screen!
  • Date: Tuesday April 8th, 2014
  • Time: Networking starts at 5:30pm, tribute to XP and 2003 at 6:30pm. Movie at 7.
  • Where:The Kent Stage, 175 East Main Street, Kent, Oh 44240

You know it's going away. You know you'll miss it.

Why not say goodbye?

April 8th marks the end of support from Microsoft for both Windows XP and Office 2003. Yeah, they're going to continue updating Endpoint, Security Essentials and other security pieces that work with XP. But XP and Office 2003 are going away.

Soooo...howzabout a going away party? And maybe a movie, while we're at it?

So, here's what we did. We're taking over The Kent Stage (um...it's in Kent, 175 East Main Street, Kent, Oh 44240), a really cool theater with a whole bunch of history. We're going to start with a networking event, followed by a big-screen showing of the 1956 classic science fiction movie "Forbidden Planet."

Free online training from Microsoft
Ok, it's time to reveal a secret.  I've kept it hidden for many years, thinking I would take it to my grave.

But I can't.  So here goes:

IT stuff is complicated.  And you need to keep up with this stuff.

Microsoft has a pretty good site, called "Microsoft Virtual Academy" that helps.  It's free, and has a ton of up-to-date content that you can take online, free of charge.  Whether it's Development (C# or <shudder> PowerShell) or infrastructure (Server 2012 R2), virtualization (Hyper-V), cloud services (365 Admin), server level apps (SQL 2014, Exchange)...

And it's free.

All About Excel (2013) Pivot Tables! - Now Online

2nd in a series of webinars presented by Simplex-IT, this is a concentrated deep dive on Excel Pivot Tables. Originally presented live for the exclusive benefit of our business IT clients, we are happy to now make this recording available to the general public.

In this 1-hour fast-paced tutorial veteran trainer Michele Bobola takes you on a non-stop roller coaster ride on Pivot Tables for Excel 2013. She points out that while the concepts presented remain similar for other versions, the examples are shown using the interface in Excel 2013 for the sake of brevity.

Plain Funny #70

Interesting.  Last month I asked "what needs a Bohemian Rhapsody if not Star Wars?"

Answer?  String Theory.  Yup, that tool/model/theory of physics that might actually explain quantum gravity by (among other things) placing us in an 11-dimension universe.

Confused?  No problem, just listen to this:

A Capella Science - Bohemian Gravity!
A Capella Science - Bohemian Gravity!

Now I admit, that might be a little heady for many of us.  So here's a video of animals.  That talk.  With British accents.

Click here to check that one out.

We'd love to hear feedback about this!  Send comments to Bob@Simplex-IT.com, or call us at 234.380.1277!
