Bob

I'm writing this at the end of Halloween evening. In spite of the weather we had about 30 or so kids visit the Coppedge abode. Two daughters and wife Julie went out trick-or-treating with granddaughter Hannibal (yup, that's what I call her...deal with it).

Grandson Bryce stayed at the house with me to hand out the candy. I tried to interest him in watching the 1922 classic silent movie "Nosferatu" (if it ain't the first vampire movie, it's darn close).

Let's just say Bryce isn't waiting breathlessly for me to get my hands on "Metropolis" as a follow up.

And that's ok. He tried something new (ok, old), decided it was lacking, and that's that. By measuring his interest (or lack) I know not to try that again.

One of the secrets to successful marketing is measurement. You don't just develop materials, send them out, hope for the best, and repeat.

Nope, you measure the results of the released materials. From the results of the measurements, you repeat (and hopefully improve) the successes and either tweak or wholly abandon the failures.

Well, I've measured our materials.

You folks like toilets.

I'm not judging. Just observing. But we (like everybody else) measure the amount of web activity our eNewsletter generates. How many openings, how many clicks on each of the links that we have. All that good stuff.

Yup, you sure like toilets.

Last month's issue included a mention of a luxury line of portable toilets (still love the name "Porta Lisa"), and a link to details behind the luxury 'loo.

Over 40% of the clicks that were people wanting to know more about the toilets. 10% were interested in Google Glass. 13% in Windows 8.1.

I seriously considered creating a "bathroom of the month" link or the like, then decided against it.

But one of the things we are going to be starting in December is a monthly hour long webinar on getting more use out of your computer. We don't have the details yet, but the tentative date is the second Thursday of the month at 11am eastern. But the goal is to spend some time on tools like Word, Outlook, Windows and show some simple things to make them more productive for folks just like you.

For now the "live" version of this is going to be for our clients only, but we'll place them on YouTube soon afterwards.

And it took a bit of soul searching whether to make this open to everybody. In the end we weren't sure how popular this was going to be. Limiting the live event to customers but making the results openly available seems like a good compromise.

Here's the schedule for the next few months' Lunchinars. But I would love to hear suggestions for moving into 2014!

  • 20 November:   When is IT obsolete?
  • 18 December:   3rd Annual Geek Raffle

You're Invited to a Free Lunchinar: "When Do You Know Your IT is Obsolete?"
    State of the Art...
    in 1908!
The Windows XP computer you bought in late 2001 still seems to work fine. Sure, it takes 15 minutes to fully boot up in the morning, but that's ok. It gives you time to get a cup of coffee! And your Office 2003 programs are still functional even though they lack the advanced features of more current versions. Why think about upgrading?

If these performance issues aren't enough to give you pause, consider this. On April 8, 2014 Microsoft will officially discontinue support for Windows XP and Office 2003. This has important ramifications because as new security vulnerabilities are discovered past that date, they will no longer receive patches. This could mean big problems for organizations of any size.

Office 2013 Guide and Review and Getting Started with Windows 8

OK, so maybe you're using an earlier version of Microsoft's venerable suite of Office applications and thinking about upgrading (special note: Office 2003 reaches its official "End of Support" soon, in April 2014). And you're wondering what new features the latest version of Office 2013 offers that will make your life easier and more productive. Or maybe you have the latest version of Office and you want to find an easy way to explore its new features. Either way, I think I have what you're looking for.

One of my favorite websites, MakeUseOf.com regularly amazes me with postings of all kinds of helpful information. A recent one I discovered is their "Office 2013 Guide and Review," a collection of new features that are being introduced in all the Office apps - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, SkyDrive, etc.

Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11 - Blindly Updating your Browser

Hey folks! Brandon here, just wanted to give you all an update on some of my experiences with Web Browsing on Windows 8.1.

With Windows 8.1 Microsoft brings Internet Explorer 11 (IE11), which contains a lot of performance and security enhancements, but changes mean that your sites need to work well with it. I have already encountered multiple instances of websites that I rely on for work that are not compatible with IE11.

When a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox gets updated, there are always new things that might not work with websites that haven't updated everything for each browser. Something that every business should be paying attention to is whether the websites they hold dear to their heart actually work on updated versions. This is one of the key reasons updating software gets delayed in a business environment.

I've liked the TV show "Big Bang Theory" for years, but always thought the theme song didn't have enough verses.

    Turns out I was right.
