Plain Funny #63
Issue: #65September/2013

Greetings!

Bob

I'm writing this on Labor Day. So yup, I'm writing this during the last final gasp of summer. Just when I started writing this I saw that 64-year-old Diana Nyad just swam over 100 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage and without flippers.

This is compared to my largest motion of the day, going out to the kitchen and making a peanut butter sandwich. However, in my tribute to Ms. Nyad, I also did this without the benefit of flippers. So there.

I know you're wondering.  Crunchy.  You're welcome.

Anyway, back to Ms. Nyad.  This was her fifth try in 35 years, taking her about 53 hours. The last time I did something for 53 hours straight probably took place around 35 years ago, and probably involved Dungeons and Dragons.

Some people have that gift to be inspirational to others. Others have the ability to become inspired by these folk. I have the ability to realize how little I've done by measuring what others have accomplished. Not in a depressing way, but just in a "oh, yeah...I could've done more, I guess..." sort of way.

Just knowing that when Mozart had been my age he had already been dead for 20 years kinda thing.

So I have to stick to my accomplishments, such as they are. Like I didn't swim much this summer at all, but did celebrate 6 years of Simplex-IT. And we celebrated as we always do, with our annual picnic. Nobody swam there, as I recall. But as always we had a great crowd come out and celebrate with us. We even had some of our vendor partners show up (folks from Equus and StorageCraft dropped by).

Had the chance to sponsor a lunch meeting with the Portage County Safety Council, and spoke to the 80+ folks at their meeting for a few minutes. Also sponsored a hole (I still have no idea what that entails) at the Mayor's Association of Portage, Stark and Summit Counties annual golf outing.

Migrated 4-5 companies over to Office 365, included working with a cool group of folks down in Columbus at Excel Management Systems inc.

Brought on board two more companies who are trusting us with their IT infrastructures and, perhaps more importantly, their IT strategies. One will be getting their welcoming cookies tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

Organized an online meeting of about 20 partners who use Level Platforms for Remote Monitoring and Management. We use these meetings to share our experiences and help develop our best practices.

We've also established our next several months of free Lunchinar topics. They are:

  • 18 September:  Google Glass
  • 16 October:       Windows 8.1
  • 20 November:   When is IT obsolete?
  • 18 December:    3rd Annual Geek Raffle
  • 15 January:         IT Trends for 2014

Ok, so now with Labor Day pretty much over, I fully expect to see Christmas decorations and sales within the next week.

Simplex-IT Serves Up Another Successful Picnic!

This past August 21, 2013 saw the successful celebration of Simplex-IT's 6th Annual Community Appreciation Picnic. Held in lieu of our standard free monthly Lunchinar, this open event is our way of saying thanks to our clients, associates, friends and community for their part in contributing to the success we've enjoyed.

This year the weather cooperated with us once again as we reprised our "Throw the Hard Drive Through the Tire" game and introduced the new "Nerf Cross Bow/Hard Drive Shooting Gallery." Several attendees won prizes from our sponsor, Microsoft.

OK, what is Google Glass and why should you care? I'm glad you asked!

Developed by Google (duh!), which has also worked on other futuristic technologies such as driverless cars, Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted video display, in which the user can interact with the Internet via finger taps and natural language voice commands. In short, it's an amazingly innovative and versatile device that will be coming to a store near you in the very near future. But Simplex-IT has an advanced sample NOW and we'll be previewing it for you at our next free Lunchinar!

Simplex-IT's own Brandon King was one of just a handful of individuals from across the country recently accepted into the Google Glass Explorer program and in late June he went to the Google offices in New York City to pick up his advance evaluation unit. Needless to say, he's been the Talk-of-the Town ever since. Brandon has graciously agreed to present Google Glass at this exciting event - and YOU'RE INVITED!

Plan Ahead or Be Afraid...Be VERY Afraid!

Back in April I posted a blog article warning about the end of support for Windows XP coming up in April 2014. As the old saying goes, "a word to the wise should be sufficient." Or so one would think.

Imagine my surprise then when I recently read the post by Tim Rains on the Microsoft Security Blog site titled "The Risk of Running Windows XP After Support Ends April 2014." Tim reports that he has talked to some customers who won't have completely migrated or, worse yet, "won't migrate from Windows XP until the hardware it's running on fails."

What!!??!!

To this I can only say it brings to mind another old saying, "penny wise and pound foolish!"

What's at stake here is nothing less than the security of your organization's network and the data it holds.

Microsoft Office for your iPhone and Android? Yup!

Bob here.  I've got a Windows 8 phone.  Yup, I'm special.  For the most part I like it.  One of the things that I like to lord over those other commoners is the fact that it's got Office.  Yup, Microsoft Office.  So, along with my Office 365 subscription I can access all of my cloud-based documents stored on SharePoint and/or SkyDrive.

Yup, I'd be sitting pretty (ok, sitting anyway), using Word, Excel or PowerPoint to edit documents that only moments ago I was editing on my tablet.  Meanwhile my friends (if you can call them that) using their iPhones and their Android phones?  They'd look at me and I swear I could see their tears in their eyes.

It felt good.

Real good, I mean.  Those guys are pretty annoying, ya know?

But I felt smug in my superiority.

For once.

Until now.

Microsoft now has two new apps.  One for iPhone, and one for the Android.

This first link is actually from Michelle.  I want this suit.  But the link is actually to a commentary about the video.  Or, it's a video commentary that includes the video.  Or, it's...

Ahh, just click here.  And I'm not sure it's a real prank or fake.

I don't care.

I just want the suit.

The second video, actually is a blatant promotion.  If you like the kind of sense of humor that we actually strive for, you probably remember "Mystery Science Theater 3000."

Short story long, they took the reasonably bad movie "Starship Troopers" and made it hilarious.  I saw the live broadcast in August.  Absolutely worth seeing!:
